I was part of a multi-disciplinary team developing a ground-based robotic platform that is being used to carry a suite of contact and non-contact sensors through breeding plots of sorghum, with the end goal of extracting phenotypic information from the plants. Partnered with geneticists and plant breeders from Clemson University, we have deployed the robot over the past 3 years in their breeding plots where we have tested our navigation and computer vision algorithms and collected extensive LiDAR and camera data.My role in this project has been to develop the base platform of the Robotanist, which transports and powers a variety of sensors to be used in the phenotyping process, to fuse a variety of sensors (IMU, wheel encoders, RTK GPS) in order to accurately localize the robot in a global coordinate frame, and to develop navigation algorithms that will allow the robot to reliably navigate the chaotic and dynamic environment that exists within crop rows.
