In-person and Virtual WorkshopsI coordinated the consortium's first-ever Virtual Workshop on " Racial Justice, Minorities rights & Religious Freedom - Global Dimensions of the Black Lives Matter Movement" which took place over three weekends, bringing students from 12 different universities across the country, and speakers from around the globe. We had a great result creating a good sense of community among our students as well as hosting very fruitful discussions on these topics and building a good network of connections between students, activists, and academics. We are now back in person with 2 to 4 workshops a year. Most of them take place at the University of Oxford, UK. But we have also developed some in Northern California. Key topics are Climate Crisis, Peace and War, New Technologies.Webinar Series I worked on planning the agenda for each Webinar, as well as methodologies and logistics to make it as engaging as possible, mimicking the interactive experience we had in our in-person workshops. Together with the Producer and Communications Coordinator, we have worked on communication strategies to increase the reach of our webinars to the OCHR community as well as a global audience. Moreover, I have given 7-min talks for certain webinars, setting the state of the world in relation to the topic of the webinar, and the COVID-19 Pandemic situation, comparing different countries' responses to the crisis at the moment.Oxford Consortium for Human Rights (OCHR) is launching a webinar series to boost its pedagogical impact with its students, alumni, and a new global audience. This is in line with our strategy to grow the Consortium significantly to reach more young people across the US and the wider world who are engaging in human rights activism, so building OCHR as a global network of young social activists around our consortium of universities.

Ophelia Deroy's Research Group: "Persuading under Uncertainty: Challenges and Norms of Science Communication"Philosophy, LMUAcademic year 2021/2022The current COVID-19 crisis in particular shows the important role scientists play in general opinion-forming. However, scientists must be convincing without arguing too lengthy or too theoretical. The communication of scientific knowledge to an audience of non-experts is therefore dependent on abbreviations and reformulations. At the same time, one of the greatest challenges is to convey the epistemic uncertainty that characterizes science. Being persuasive requires clear, confident messages, but science is seldom clear and necessarily fallible. The Research Group project identifies this as a key and important dilemma: when scientists understand the uncertainty surrounding the scientific process, Misrepresenting the hypotheses and findings could gain influence, but they could be accused of being misleading. On the other hand, if they are transparent about this uncertainty, they could reduce their influence. So how might the fallibility and epistemic uncertainty of science be conveyed? Is it legitimate to simplify or hide the uncertainty of given scientific claims? The Research Group will examine these current issues by building on approaches from epistemology, philosophy, psychology and science communication. In doing so, it takes a normative perspective on an issue that is often viewed from a more strategic perspective: many approaches address the question of how science can be communicated effectively, while the Research Group will examine the legitimacy of this potentially effective communication.
