Initiating from my days as an 18-year-old player for the Hampton Roads Admirals, my commitment to providing ice sports entertainment/opportunities and advancing the sport of hockey in the Hampton Roads region has never wavered.Resurrected out of bankruptcy in 2003, the Chilled Ponds Ice Sports Complex – together with the Hampton Roads Whalers – blazed new paths that changed the geographical landscape and disrupted a traditional player development pathway that today includes Whaler Nation and the Southeast region of the US. Grassroots engagement programs evolved into world-class tournaments, multiple national championships, hundreds of player advancements and YOY multi-million dollar-community economic impact. From recreation to high-caliber training to gateways to university/professional hockey, the opportunities offered by Hampton Roads Whalers continue to grow. The original vision for a comprehensive ‘under one roof’ development model became a reality in 2019 with the acquisition of the Norfolk Admirals’ professional hockey organization, which has a 33-year legacy in Norfolk. The Admirals’ rebirth ignited key community partnerships, increased attendance and affiliation with the Carolina Hurricanes (NHL).This transformational growth led to being awarded the 2023 ECHL All-Star game weekend that created tremendous local economic impact featuring multiple events consisting of Fan Fest in the downtown Waterside district, the Hall of Fame inductees dinner, sharing the Stanley Cup with the Hampton Roads region and hosting the tremendously successful ECHL All-Star Game, which was broadcasted globally by the NHL Network.Chilled Ponds celebrates its 20th anniversary by expanding its footprint to Yorktown, Virginia. Chilled Ponds @Yorktown furthers our efforts to provide more exposure, broader programming and comprehensive connectivity to our community. The successes in our industry are generally measured by wins and losses. However, experience points to the true gift as being the collective journey, mentoring and human development outcomes that support our youths’ journeys to adulthood. The results evolve into unique, life-long family relationship bonds anchored in delivering fine individuals to our communities for the next generation of service.
