This was a 4-person collaborative project with Rolls-Royce where a machine learning approach, the RESNET-50 convolutional neural network more precisely, was used to identify damages within 4 different superalloy types used in airplane turbine engines. Some of these damages are easy to identify with visual inspection and some are extremely difficult. The approach taken in this project was able to identify the damages within these images and also classify them by four parameters: salt flux, exposure time, temperature and superalloytype; with high accuracy.
