About Tobias Fecker

++++ Krijn Rietveld Memorial Innovation Award Winner 2023++++++++ Best Master Graduate at the Leiden Institute of Biology in 2020++++++++ Team Manager of iGEM Leiden 2019 - Best Manufacturing Project ++++Driven by making impact with Biotechnology I became a master generalist in the entire bioprocess value chain, from computational small molecule design to 15k Liter upscale systems. My curiosity brought me -> to Santiago de Chile, where I experimented with protein modelling and docking for plastic degrading enzymes, 🍾-> to the iGEM giant Jamboree in Boston as the team captain of the Leiden iGEM 2019 team where we tried to make artificial skin grafts using squid protein 🐙-> to Leiden, where I worked in up- and downstream research on vaccine production 💉 and-> to Delft, where in my PhD I try to build a biotech process that not only reduces emission but is truly zero-emission, based on renewable substrates and waste streams. 🌳Together with a strong background in data science and AI, I can talk to any of your engineers that work somewhere in between. Let me join you in designing the bioprocesses that really replace fossil-based chemicals.

Amazing company at the forefront of vaccine research in the Benelux area. We serve international clients with innovative solutions to vaccine production problems and offer from small-scale research to GMP production scale products. In Batavia, my responsibilities revolve around upstream engineering, I work with cell culture systems and advanced bioreactors to push the virus titer to the absolute limits. % Adherent and suspension cell culture% Fixed-Bed reactors% Equipment assembly% Operator training% Research design% Writing of SOPs% Data analysis% DSP
  • Technische Universiteit Delft
Research Internship In Bioprocess Engineering And Biotechnology
Technische Universiteit Delft Mar 2020 - Oct 2020
    Delft Area, Netherlands
Working in a joint project between the Bioprocess engineering and the industrial microbiology groups at TU Delft. Here, I tried to optimize an in situ process to obtain a valuable product in a growing culture. It was successful and will soon be part of a publication, so stay tuned!Supervisors: Jean-Marc Daran, Adrie Straathof Grade: 9.5Biggest Achievement: Acquiring an engineering mindset and receiving an award as best Master/PhD thesis in biology/data science of Leiden University!
  • Igem Leiden
    Team Manager
    Igem Leiden Jan 2019 - Nov 2019
    The Hague Area, Netherlands
I was the team manager of a team of 12 ambitious students on our way to the giant jamboree in Boston for the finale of the iGEM competition, the biggest competition in synbio worldwide. See below for an overview of our project S.P.L.A.S.H., where we engineered biological wound dressings based on squid sucker teeth rings. e presented our project at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, together with 350+ other teams and we won the award for the 'Best Manufacturing Project'! During the project I was part of many events, such as an exhibition at Micropia, Amsterdam and have given several talks, the latest being the keynote speech at the WON Manifestatie Amsterdam on the 25th of September. Here, I talked to around 200 students and officials about the risks and merits of synthetic biology (see post). Biggest Achievement: Successfully dissolved many conflicts between my high-achieving teammates and worked to keep the morale high in tough phases.
  • Institute Of Biology Leiden
    Internship In Microbiology
Institute Of Biology Leiden Oct 2018 - Jun 2019
    The Hague Area, Netherlands
In this Internship I was working with Streptomyces, that are famously known for producing two thirds of all current antibiotics. A lot of these antibiotics are also effective against cancer cells, which was be the focus of this internship. We were quite successful in developing a novel device for the screening of cancer molecules produced by Streptomyces and have submitted it to the patent office. The project was in collaboration with industrial partners, who I gave frequent updates to.Supervisor: Gilles van Wezel, Grade: 9.0Biggest Achievement: Designing a working gadget based on an idea and making it work by constantly updating the design.
  • Pontificia Universidad CatĂłlica De Chile
    Researcher In Computational Biophysics
Pontificia Universidad CatĂłlica De Chile Sep 2016 - Dec 2017
    Santiago De Chile
In this project, the main Focus was on PETase, a fascinating enzyme which allowed the bacterium I.sakaiensis to use plastic as a primary carbon source. We elucidated the structure and used this information to gain insights about the dynamics in the protein. Through molecular dynamics simulations we found the flexibility of an active site loop to be favorable for the catalysis of plastic degeneration. The findings were published in Biophysical Journal.Biggest achievement: Publishing a manuscript in a journal. Reaching proficiency in Spanish both for informal and professional conversations.
  • Fraunhofer Chile Research
    Intern In Process Design
Fraunhofer Chile Research Jul 2017 - Nov 2017
    Santiago De Chile
The Fraunhofer Center of Systems Biology in Chile is an institute which performs contracted research to industrial stakeholders. I worked in the biomaterials group, where we tried to engineer ways to extract valuable chemicals from waste materials, such as grape pomace. The focus was on extraction by supercritical CO2. We conducted both lab-scale experiments and also implemented one design at the pilot scale.Biggest achievement: Designed protocols for several processes related to liquid-liquid extraction.
  • Institute For Nanobiotechnology, MĂźnster University
    Bachelor Thesis
Institute For Nanobiotechnology, MĂźnster University Mar 2015 - Sep 2015
    MĂźnster Area, Germany
Title of Thesis: “Microfluidic-based production and characterization offunctional chitosan nanoparticles for targeted gene delivery”. Part of my results were published in 'Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces' titled 'A rational approach towards the design of chitosan-based nanoparticles obtained by ionotropic gelation' (see below).Supervisor: Dr. Francisco Goycoolea, Grade 1.0 (very good)Biggest Achievement: Helping to write a manuscript that was subsequently accepted in a journal.
