About Toby Coe
I am a fisheries biologist working at a small, technical environmental consultancy based in the South-West of England. I specialise in the design of fish passes, investigations into migration patterns of fish (both in the UK and abroad) and R&D in new solutions to improve fish passage at structures ranging from small weirs to very large hydropower schemes. My work to date has involved the design of some of the largest fish passes in the UK (on the River Severn) as part of the large 'Unlocking the Severn' project, as well as fish pass design work and the provision of advice to hydropower projects on the River Mekong in Laos, in Nepal, West Africa and Europe. I am also involved in a sister company, Fishtek Marine, which is a highly innovative company working on developing products to reduce bycatch in commercial marine fisheries. In particular, we are working on products to reduce the bycatch of cetaceans, a replacement electric light to replace 'glow-sticks' used in commercial fishing and a deterrent to reduce bycatch of sharks in long-lining. In addition to my work as a fisheries biologist and fish pass designer, I am a widely published photographer and journalist, with a focus on fly-fishing. I travel the world looking for unique and interesting fishing locations to photograph and write about, and my work has been published in numerous magazines.
