About Toby Johnson

I lead the Genomic Technologies team of 40 outstanding scientists at GSK. We integrate deep and broad expertise in human genetic and genomic data, and in computational and statistical methods and techniques, delivering best-in-class analytical insight and data interpretation, driving decisions in drug discovery and in clinical translation.Originally, my undergraduate and doctoral degrees were in mathematics and population genetics. Through academic research positions, I developed research interests in statistical genetics methodology and in human genetic data analysis. My personal interests include using -omics data to infer causal genes for GWAS signals, causal inference and Mendelian randomization, inference from summary statistics, and pharmacogenomics and biomarkers.I have technical expertise in: Statistical Genetics; Genetic Epidemiology; Causal Inference; Pharmacogenetics (PGx); Classical and Bayesian Statistics; Computationally Intensive Statistics; Bioinformatics; Programming in R, Python, Spark, C++, C.

Listed skills include Bioinformatics, R, Python, Perl, and 12 others.

Research Fellow

London, Greater London, Gb

I extended my previous research on cardiovascular disease genetics. I wrote successful grant applications for a Wellcome Trust Value in People Award and a Wellcome Trust University Award. I co-led international consortium efforts involving over 300 scientists, to analyse blood pressure and genomic data from ~70,000 people. Our results were published in Nature and were ranked by the American Heart Association in the top 10 advances in cardiovascular research in 2011. I also conducted research on the genetics of other complex diseases, on statin pharmacogenetics, and on the (lack of) causal relationship between HDL cholesterol and coronary disease.

May 2009 - Dec 2011

Post-Doc

Lausanne, Vaud, Ch

I took primary responsibility in Lausanne for genetic data quality control (QC) and genetic analyses in the CoLaus cohort (a population cohort of ~6000 individuals with extensive phenotyping data and genotyping at ~500,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms [SNPs]). I was among the first to demonstrate that fine scale genetic structure across Europe mirrors the geographical distribution in two dimensional space. I used genome wide association scan (GWAS) analyses to discover new genetic associations with a wide range of cardiovascular and metabolic phenotypes, and I developed novel statistical methodology for GWAS applications. I was instrumental in consortium efforts that analysed the genetics of blood pressure, and our major research output was ranked among the 10 most important papers for heart disease and stroke in 2009 by the American Heart Association.

May 2007 - Apr 2009

Lecturer In Statistical Bioinformatics

Leeds, West Yorkshire, Gb

I taught undergraduate statistics, and continued my research on statistical methodology for genetic association studies.

Sep 2006 - Apr 2007

Lecturer In Evolutionary Genomics

Edinburgh, Gb

I taught statistical genetics to MSc students, and taught population and evolutionary genetics to undergraduate genetics and zoology students.

Sep 2005 - Aug 2006

Post-Doctoral Research Assistant

Harpenden, Hertfordshire, Gb

I researched novel statistical methodology for estimating ancestry from genetic data, for genetic association mapping, and for alignment of non-coding DNA.

Apr 2003 - Aug 2005

Research Fellow

Vancouver, British Columbia, Ca

I was awarded a Wellcome Trust International Prize Travelling Research Fellowship. I continued to study mathematical population genetics, specializing in systems with multiple interacting genes.
