AuthorAmazon Jul 2010 - Dec 2021New York, United StatesRUNNING WITH DESTINY: An Odyssey of Mistakes, Machetes, and Miracles. Toby Tanser’s epic memoir of searching for purpose when first led to Kenya in the 1990s is a part amazing adventure, part triumph, and tragedy, but ultimately a riveting and inspiring true story. “This is God’s work,” said Steven Spielberg, speaking about the building of East & Central Africa’s 1st public children’s hospital—which plays out as the book’s principal theme.Toby faces an unbelievable mountain of hurdles. Hacked with a machete, poisoned, battered by a speeding car, pelted with stones, caught in a near civil war, savagely struck on the skull by a baseball bat—all strong hints to select alternative life choices. However, as CNN’s Sanjay Gupta suggests, “Although he almost died, it was a chance for Toby to find his calling.”Prepare to be energized by a swashbuckling odyssey commencing in England, flying over to Iceland, traveling to Sweden, shifting to America, and onto Kenya. Toby's pilgrimage is a testament to gritty endurance that demonstrates how one unpaid volunteer can make a difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of children by starting, then running, the shoestring of all charitable organizations. If you are looking for a nudge to transform your life—or are stuck at the crossroads of decision—this book bursts with motivation, vitality, and direction. Robert Zoellick, former President of the World Bank, states, “Toby’s passion and commitment to helping Africa’s children is infectious.” Pick up this book and run with your destiny. -
Vice PresidentAchilles International Sep 2011 - Jan 2020New York City, International Worldwide OrganizationFollowing my tenure of eight years as a Board Director, I spent the next eight years as the Vice President of Achilles International where I worked as the #2 to Dr. Dick Traum, the founder and CEO, before his untimely dismissal in 2019. Formerly known as the Achilles Track Club, and founded in the New York Road Runner's building in 1983, this was the premier organization helping athletes with disabilities enter into mainstream sports. With the forced departure of Dr. Dick Traum—the first amputee to run a marathon in 1976,—along with his son who had worked with the Achilles since the 90s, and VP Mary Bryant, the founder of the Achilles Freedom Team and others after a takeover, the organization took a different approach and Dick Traum's 37 year passion of 'program before profit' disappeared from the directive of the organization's board. -

Director Of EventAchilles Hope & Possibility Sep 2006 - Dec 2019Central Park, New York, New YorkThe Hope & Possibility 4-miler, NY, NY. Directed the largest running event for athletes with disabilities and mainstreaming with non-disability runners outside of the New York City Marathon. Taking the event from a small scale race with a 1,000 runners to a large scale event. Bringing entertainment like the NYC Knicks dancers, movie stars, offering free SUBWAY sandwiches, getting the city's baseball mascots, the city's best known weathermen, and others to raise the profile, the event won two Mayor's proclamations from Mayor Bloomberg in 2008! The second award was for a new initiative called, 'The Kids Against Obesity race' which addressed a growing problem that drew little attention in 2006/7/8. Prince Harry of England accepted an invitation to come and run in the event in 2010 making him the first royal to run a race in Central Park. Anthony Edwards, Jon Stewart were regular attendees, and Armie Hammer, Gloria Gaynor, & Heather Mills have also attended the event in recent years. Under my directorship, the participation grew by 700%, cut costs by over 75%, sold out every year but one, and became an official scoring race for the TCS New York City Marathon. Sponsors during my years of directorship included: TD Bank, Subway Sandwiches, Adidas, New Balance, Goldman Sachs, Cushman Wakefield, Silverstein Properties, General Motors, Cigna and more.

Co ProducerNyrr Audio Guide Sep 2006 - Dec 2006NycWrote the scripts, found the talent, planned the concept of an audio guided tour over the last 5km of the NYC marathon using four people to represent differing speeds (6min mile, to 10 min mile) Catherine Ndereba, the double world marathon champion – 6 min mile, Elliot Spitzer who actually recorded his segment on the morning when he was voted in to be the NY State Governor! Anthony Edwards who was my three times per week running partner and most famous as Mr. Goose, and America’s first Super model, Kim Alexis for 10-min mile pace. It’s a conversation on the run. Learn tips, like what do the fast runners eat before running, what should you eat? Why does Kim write names on the bottom of her shoe, why did she start running? What is her diet? What are her tips? Where does Eliot run in NYC, what music does he listen to as a runner? What’s his advice for running the marathon? What is the song Catherine sings as she runs, what does she think about when winning marathons? It’s a conversation on the run about the most famous marathon in the world. We (you the listener and I) meet at the famed 89th St NYRR house, and walk to the park to stretch before meeting our celeb, then going out to run the last three miles of the iconic course. Bear in mind listening to this guide is in Virtual time (hence sometimes it moves slowly when listening, also we do ‘stretches’ – have patience…).‘World Champion’ Catherine Ndereba: 6 min pace.‘Goose’ Anthony Edwards: 8 min pace. ‘Governor’ Eliot Spitzer: 9 min pace. The man who ran the city.‘Supermodel ‘ Kim Alexis: 10 min pace. Working with the Soundwalk team as with the Puma TrainAway series.

Co ProducerSoundwalk/Trainaway Jul 2005 - Dec 2006New York City, London, Paris, And BerlinThe idea was to bring running podcasts to the people for an informative, fun run through a famous park – so we started with Central Park and wrote a script following the famous 6-mile loop. I, as a coach would run with a personality (what today they call an Influencer) and the runner would listen to our talk as they ran. We also learn about theinfluencer’s life and along the loop we would “meet” names of the running world. After NYC we went to London’s Hyde Park, scouted out a great route, wrote a script, and found local talent with Olympic champion Linford Christine as the ‘coach’ with radio presenter Katy Hill. Then Paris (using local actress Aïssa Maïga and Marc Maury), and Tiergarten, Berlin (actress Jessica Schwarz). Each time I would find a good route, research the area for highlights and write a script that was time synced with the runner’s pace. The coach would offer many tips, the talent would offer stories added with people like Waldemar Cierpinski, the Double Gold Olympic marathoner from Berlin, who come in as ‘expert voices’ adding interesting stories. “Marathon is half body, half mind; make sure you activate your soul and exercise your mind.”We also do an ancillary treadmill work out version talking about the hip NYC, London, Paris, and Berlin street life, nightclubs, restaurants, etc with doing a challenging program of a hill – elevation button. Same cast (format) for each city.
