Toby grew up in Port Townsend, a small north coast town on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. He attended Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle directly out of high school, where he started work on photography, sculpture, film, assemblage, screen printing and painting. He was chosen to participate in an artist-in-residence through SVA named the New York Studio Residency Program in Brooklyn, NY in the spring of 2014. Warren has recently moved back to Brooklyn after receiving his BFA diploma from Cornish, and continues to push his career both in Seattle and NYC. Toby’s work continues to evolve with his experiences, and the development of contemporary conceptual spaces. Warren demonstrates an unwavering commitment to his practice and its development. His ideas and chosen methodologies are explored rigorously and he is never afraid to take risks to move his practice forward. His paintings and installations highlight Toby’s preoccupations around gender and the commodification of contemporary culture. He interrogates material and media through experimental processes and understands thinking through making, as well as making through thinking.
