I am a senior research analyst in the Science and Emerging Technology team at RAND Europe, based in Cambridge and London. My main interest is in understanding, monitoring, and reducing risks resulting from biology and its convergence with other technologies. I have coordinated and contributed to a number of projects at the intersection of artificial intelligence and synthetic biology. These include the development of a risk index for AI-enabled dual-use tools in synthetic biology and an assessment of the risks of biological data for training dual-use narrow AI tools in biology. I also contribute to work on biosurveillance with a particular interest in pathogen-agnostic early detection systems, and I am member of the research and innovation and capacity building technical working groups for GLOWACON, the global wastewater biosurveillance consortium hosted by HERA in the European Commission. My other research interests include microbial forensics and judgmental forecasting on technology and health security.I have an academic background in experimental psychology and clinical medicine and I continue to practice in emergency medicine.
