Oversees the research and development capabilities of a Laboratory of over 6100 staff members and a budget of over $2B. Ensures R&D capabilities support programs, promote economic development, and promote technology transfer. Integrates with internal and external communications, government relations, and outreach efforts to advance the Laboratory mission. Works with the senior leadership team to plan, acquire, and develop the intellectual resources, facilities, and equipment to execute the mission components of the Laboratory. Assures strategic alignment and best use of indirect investments in laboratory directed R&D and program development. Integrates and coordinates interactions with industry, universities, customers, Federal and State governments, and DOE on matters related to science and technology programs and research partnerships.

Leads the activities of a directorate of ~350 staff members with a budget of over $150M conducting research, development, and demonstration related to clean energy integration, advanced transportation systems, advanced manufacturing, and environmental sustainability. As a member of INL’s senior leadership team, works with the Laboratory Director, Deputy Directors, and the other Associate Laboratory Directors in setting Laboratory strategies and goals and supporting their implementation. Provides overall strategic vision for the EES&T Directorate including identification of new research opportunities and the recruitment and development of an outstanding and diverse science, engineering and technical staff to support the Directorate’s mission. Oversees research and operational activities through a staff of managers who lead the development of core capabilities in applied materials science and engineering; environmental subsurface science; agricultural processes and engineering; power systems and electrical engineering; chemical and molecular science and engineering; and systems science and engineering.

Provides leadership for and exercises management control over programs totaling $115M+, a 175+ member technical staff, and support personnel in the Global Security Sciences (GSS) Division. GSS is a vibrant, interdisciplinary research community which finds solutions to protect against, mitigate, respond to, and recover from a wide spectrum of national and global security threats. It is home to four research centers with cross-cutting capabilities: the Center for Integrated Resilience Analyses (CIRA), the Center for Strategic Security (CSS), the Risk and Infrastructure Science Center (RISC), and the Systems Science Center (SSC).

Leads a large, multidisciplinary, applied research and development organization that addresses domestic and global sustainable energy and security issues. EGS employs over 800 people and has an annual budget in excess of $250M. Provides senior leadership for EGS programs that span multiple scientific, engineering and technical disciplines and a variety of external sponsors. As a member of Argonne’s senior management team, works with the Laboratory Director, Deputy Directors, and the other Associate Laboratory Directors in setting Laboratory strategies and goals and supporting their implementation. Provides overall strategic vision for the EGS Directorate including identification of new research opportunities and the recruitment and development of an outstanding and diverse science, engineering and technical staff to support the Directorate’s mission. Oversees research and operational activities through a staff of executive line managers, including Division Directors who lead their respective areas in Energy Systems, Global Security Sciences, Intelligence and Analysis, and Nuclear Engineering.

Provides leadership for and exercises management control over programs totaling $115M+, a 175+ member technical staff, and support personnel in the Global Security Sciences (GSS) Division. GSS is a vibrant, interdisciplinary research community which finds solutions to protect against, mitigate, respond to, and recover from a wide spectrum of national and global security threats. It is home to four research centers with cross-cutting capabilities: the Center for Integrated Resilience Analyses (CIRA), the Center for Strategic Security (CSS), the Risk and Infrastructure Science Center (RISC), and the Systems Science Center (SSC).

Provides leadership for and exercises management control over programs totaling $100M+, a 150+ member technical staff, and support personnel in the Decision and Information Sciences Division. The Division is diverse and multidisciplinary with a research portfolio that encompasses energy systems analysis, homeland and national security, and decision and social dynamics analysis.
