This is accomplished through developing corporate policies and standards; sharing operating experience, lessons learned, and best practices; and providing assistance and supporting services as DOE’s environment, health, safety and security advocate. Previously in DOE Mr. Lapointe served in a variety of leadership and safety roles within the National Nuclear Security Administration, as well as Offices of Science and Environmental Management. Mr. Lapointe also has executive experience serving as Chief of Staff and Central Technical Authority nuclear safety advisor for multiple Under Secretaries of Energy over four administrations.Mr. Lapointe has over 30 years of experience providing broad operations and policy leadership managing worker safety and health, emergency management, radiological safety, environmental protection and quality assurance, among others. In addition, Mr. Lapointe has served on numerous operational, accident, safety and management reviews including serving as the nuclear safety team lead for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant Accident Investigation Board responsible for determining the causes and corrective actions related to the February, 2014 underground radiological release accident at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad, NM. Before coming to the Department of Energy, Mr. Lapointe provided management and leadership in the commercial research and development software industry and served as an officer aboard submarines in the U.S Pacific Fleet.

Provide technical leadership and expertise to ensure adequate design, construction and operation for the lifecycle of NNSA nuclear and high-hazard, non-nuclear facilities, including major modifications, life extensions, and decommissioning/disposal. In this role I led the development of the Agency’s Safety Roadmap providing the strategic framework, initiatives, and timelines under which NNSA will improve safety management through an enhanced oversight support methodology and the deployment of new tools to optimize safe mission execution. I also chaired a Panel of Federal Senior Executives, National Laboratory leadership, nationally recognized university and industry experts established by the Department to review and challenge efforts to mitigate and recover from events resulting in the uncontrolled spread of highly toxic plutonium associated with demolition of former processing facilities at the Department’s Hanford Nuclear Reservation.
