Mr. Lapointe also has executive experience serving as Chief of Staff and Central Technical Authority nuclear safety advisor for multiple Under Secretaries of Energy over four administrations.Mr. Lapointe has over 30 years of experience providing broad operations and policy leadership managing worker safety and health, emergency management, radiological safety, environmental protection and quality assurance, among others. In addition, Mr. Lapointe has served on numerous operational, accident, safety and management reviews including serving as the nuclear safety team lead for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant Accident Investigation Board responsible for determining the causes and corrective actions related to the February, 2014 underground radiological release accident at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad, NM. Before coming to the Department of Energy, Mr. Lapointe provided management and leadership in the commercial research and development software industry and served as an officer aboard submarines in the U.S Pacific Fleet.

The WIPP is a deep geologic repository, mined out of a thick bed of salt, for the disposal of defense transuranic waste (TRU) waste generated primarily from the cleanup of DOE sites.
