About Todd E. Vachon

Todd Vachon is an assistant professor of labor studies and the director of the Labor Education Action Research Network (LEARN) at Rutgers University's School of Management and Labor Relations. LEARN provides educational opportunities, trainings, applied research, and public programming for workers and their organizations in pursuit of the common good. As a scholar, Todd's research and teaching interests include labor and social movements, sustainability, social stratification, and employment relations. His published works have explored a variety of issues related to work, labor, and the environment, including the effects of globalization and neoliberalism on economic inequality, teacher unionization and student achievement, worker’s attitudes on environmental issues, and efforts by workers and climate justice activists in pursuit of a just transition. Todd's recent book "Revaluing Work(ers): Toward a Democratic and Sustainable Future" (Cornell Univ. Press) co-edited with Tobias Schulze-Cleven, presents a labor studies perspective on the future of work, arguing that revaluing work—the efforts and contributions of workers—is crucial to realizing the promises of democracy and improving sustainability. Todd is currently finishing a book manuscript about the American Labor-Climate Movement. In addition to his scholarly interest in labor and environment, Todd is a former union carpenter and public school teacher and has served on the national steering committee for the Labor Network for Sustainability. He also served as the first President of the UConn Graduate Employee Union, UAW Local 6950 from 2015-2018, is currently on the executive council of the Rutgers AAUP-AFT, is VP for Higher Ed AFTNJ, and is Vice President of the Middlesex-Somerset Central Labor Council.
