Motionpoems is a nonprofit production company positioned for rapid growth at the intersection of fine art, e-books, and short-form shareable experiences. Motionpoems' mission is to broaden the audience for poetry by turning great contemporary poems into short films. We have produced 120+ film adaptations of poems by Pulitzer Prize winners and early-career poets alike, in partnership with a dozen top literary publishers, premiering them annually at the Walker Art Center and other venues and film festivals around the world. In 2013, FORBES called our films "astonishing, powerful, and hilarious" and said Motionpoems is "driving a poetry renaissance." In 2017 we tested the world's first mass transit VR experience, Chaos on the Green Line, slated for expansion in 2019.

A farm kid with a city life, I am fascinated with public spaces. My work attempts to "make cities more poetic," and to re-contextualize contemporary poetry in shared urban environments. I have never worked on commission, preferring instead to match my own vision for a space with the space's idiosyncratic needs, and find funding as I move forward. COLLABORATOR — “Project 35W” 2012Collaborated with Swedish artist Maja Spasova to create a floating meditation garden in the Mississippi River to mark the 5th anniversary of the 35W Bridge collapse, combined my 35-part poem “Fragments for the 35W Bridge” with 35 oversized life-rings anchored in the river in downtown Minneapolis.

Consistently ranked "Best Theater" in local media, Ten Thousand Things presents top regional actors in classic and contemporary plays and musicals, stripped to the bare bones for non-traditional audiences, including those in prisons and shelters. The model is now emulated at major theaters from coast to coast.

As the chief marketing and development officer, I grew annual revenues from $500,000 to $1.4M in a 5-year period, gave the 250-member organization a national agenda that now counts over 750 member writers in 45 states and foreign countries, created an NEA-supported college theater development program called New Plays On Campus, inaugurated over a dozen collaborative community partnerships, and helped bring The Playwrights’ Center to prominence as a new play authority under the extraordinary leadership of Dr. Polly Carl.

I was a media and public relations representative for Honest Tea, Magnetic Poetry, and other clients, developing campaigns, creating and coordinating press materials, pitching stories to trade and consumer media, directing media tours, organizing events, and monitoring results. I conceived and managed the 11,000-mile 37-city “Catch the Poetry Bug” campaign partnering client Magnetic Poetry with Volkswagen of America's new Beetle: Three poetry-covered bugs visited schools, museums, and libraries for National Poetry Month 1999, with a White House literacy tie-in and $1M in giveaway books. The campaign got $2.5M in publicity and was named an Ad Age “Top 100 Marketer.”
