“WILL WE HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO ENJOY OUR LIVES IN RETIREMENT?” That’s the question every client, even those who are mathematicians, come to our office wondering. IT’S A QUESTION I LOVE TO ANSWER. I love telling clients who have worked hard and followed a plan, “YES. YOU CAN LIVE A RICH, GENEROUS, ABUNDANT LIFE. Whatever abundant means for you.”Here’s an example. It’s the summer of 2016 when I get a call from my client, Janet. She’s crying. “Todd, Randy just died. He had a heart attack.” I was totally shocked. Randy was only 64, and to make matters worse he had officially retired just 21 days ago. MY HEART BROKE FOR THEM.At this point, I had already been working with them for years, so after my initial shock wore off, I helped make sure Janet kept to their plan. The good news was Randy was an engineer. And if you know an engineer or are one yourself, then you know he was meticulous about having the I’s dotted and the T’s crossed. Working the plan we had already created made it easier to guide Janet and her family as they moved forward. For example:• We made sure her kids and grandkids were taken care of. • We managed the company stock and stock options. As well as other investments. • And we consistently review the question, “Will there be enough?”Fast forward to today. Yes, it’s been an adjustment, but Janet is absolutely thriving. I spoke with her recently and she said, “Todd, you know I still miss Randy, but I LOVE MY LIFE.” Nothing gives me more joy than to hear those words. Today, Janet is in her early 70s and shows no signs of slowing down. She travels, is generous with her grandkids, has many friends, is a dedicated volunteer with her church, and she just established a scholarship in Randy’s memory at his alma mater.
