My early career work focused on immunology and parasitology, but since 2001 I have joined that experience with an ongoing interest in fish biology, estuarine ecology and conservation. Beginning in 2011 I led a study of habitat usage by juvenile fish in the Grays Harbor estuary (WA), as well as examining the effects of climate change (2012 report) as a framework for planning restoration and conservation efforts in the basin in the coming decades. Prior work focused on juvenile salmon ecology studies in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the San Juan Islands, the Snohomish River estuary, the Columbia River estuary, and nearshore work off the coasts of Washington and Oregon. My Ph.D. dissertation work involved researching the effects of multiple infections (viral, bacterial and parasitic) on the growth and survival of juvenile salmon early in the marine phase of their life cycle. My master's work investigated the infection dynamics of Myxobolus cerebralis (Whirling disease) on trout and salmon in NE Oregon. This interest in Disease Ecology (how pathogens influence and potentially regulate populations) continues in my work for the Wild Fish Conservancy, where we have initiated a research program that includes sampling for exotic viruses in Puget Sound as well as working to examine the potential effects of Atlantic salmon net pens on native Pacific salmonids. I also have an ongoing interest in science education and increasing public awareness of the challenges facing us in salmon and ecosystem conservation and the effects of climate change.Specialties: Estuarine ecology, disease ecology, fish biology and microbiology, immunology, conservation

Fisheries BiologistNoaa Fisheries Contractor Feb 2015 - Sep 2015Mukilteo, WaNOAA affiliate on a project to monitor and assess juvenile salmon habitat usage in the Snohomish River estuary and near shore (near Everett, WA). The project is part of a long-term study to monitor the effects of several habitat restoration projects on wild and hatchery fish populations in the Snohomish, in cooperation with biologists from the Tulalip tribe and Snohomish county.

Senior EcologistWild Fish Conservancy Dec 2010 - Aug 2015Lead investigator of a project to determine estuarine habitat use by the juvenile fish community in Grays Harbor, WA. The primary goal was to identify salmon habitat usage patterns so that the county can wisely spend its restoration/conservation funds in future years. Led a team of 8 WFC staff and volunteers in the field from March-September. Responsible for all aspects of the project, from literature reviews to project design and implementation; built and managed the project database, producde data analysis and summary reports for funding agencies, coordinated sampling logistics and genetic sampling with state and federal biologists. -
Fisheries Microbiologist/BiologistNoaa Jun 2007 - Oct 2010Worked on a project to investigate the ecology of juvenile salmon and the marine fish community in the Straight of Juan de Fuca, the San Juan Islands, and the Snohomish River estuary. Coordinated and carried out field sampling efforts in townetting and beach seining, built and managed the database, and produced summary reports for NOAA personnel and local tribes. Responsible for logistics, genetic sampling, monitoring water quality, and equipment staging; assisted with state and federal ESA permitting and a hydroacoustic survey in Puget Sound via acoustic tag insertion and deployment and retrieval of hydrophones/receivers -
Faculty Research AssistantOregon State University Apr 2001 - Jun 2008Researched the health, condition and survival of juvenile salmonids in the near-shore NE Pacific Ocean and Columbia River estuary. Performed extensive ocean trawl sampling of fish, zooplankton and nutrient samples, as well as CTD data, aboard contracted fishing vessels; estuary sampling via purse and beach seines. Conducted analyses of viral, bacterial and macroparasitic pathogens via microscopy, nested PCR, qPCR. Responsible for progress reports to funding agencies, database management, ESA permitting, analysis and publication of research results, and presentation of data at regional and national meetings. Trained high school volunteers and college student interns. -
Research AssistantUniversity Of Colorado Health Sciences Center 1995 - 1997Studied the onset of autoimmune diabetes in humans and the non-obese mouse model. Cultured human and murine T and B cells and dendritic cells; investigated insulin-peptide recognition through cloning, proliferation assays, PCR, ELISA, DNA sequencing, and FACS analysis. -
Research AssistantInterative Knowledge, Inc. 1994 - 1995Designed a closed biofiltering aquarium for microgravity research aboard the space shuttle on a NASA subcontract. Performed experiments on zebrafish and medaka growth rates and inhibition, food/waste analysis by atomic absorption spectroscopy, pheremone extraction, chemical and biological water purification, bacterial culture, and general system design. Produced annual progress reports and supervised two lab assistants.
