Bundaberg Walkers Engineering Ltd (BWEL) have a 140 year history of heavy engineering and manufacturing. This has been predominantly in the Sugar industry with a bunch of processing equipment thrown in for good measure. This current role is to further diversify their customer base and making use of the existing in house capabilities that include large castings, in-house design / modelling / detailing, heavy fabrication, heavy CNC machining, blasting and painting, project management and site installation services.

The role included the sales manger role described below with the additional responsibility of managing the geographically diverse service team. This included co-ordination, assignment and support of the field engineers to install, commission and upgrade Jords and competitors processing equipment. A large focus of the team is identifying opportunities for performance and reliability improvements.

Responsible for sales, budgets, estimation, scope of supply, preliminary design and some project management for all major aftermarket projects with-in the Jord group, reporting directly to the general manager of the division. The role also included warranty co-ordination and negotiation for the Jord group. Australia, Malaysia and the Middle East was areas the focus.

Responsible for business development, sales and estimation for energy section processing equipment. The role included customer management and negotiation of contracts for process plant equipment with EPC’s and end users from the Oil and Gas, Energy, Petrochemical and Resource industries.

Business Development Manager – Aftermarket. Single responsibility for sales, budgets, estimation, scope of supply, preliminary design and some project management for all major aftermarket projects in Australia. The role included management responsibilities for site works Jord and contractors that were working in a high risk environment. Other responsibilities included consultation and mentoring junior sales, design and project management staff.

Responsible for sales, estimation, design and project management of aftermarket and spare parts projects. This included calculation, design, detailing, equipment selection, purchasing, reporting and expediting. Originally I was brought into the spares team to boost the engineering capability and close the gap between the spares and design departments. I developed systems for the complex jobs including punch lists and estimation tools.

I originally arrived at Jord to complete my draughting apprenticeship and tertiary qualifications; I was quickly moved to design detailing mostly on Autocad. However for the majority of this time I was a lead engineer responsible for the engineering budgets on nominated projects, resource allocation and engineering deliverables. My time was spent closely with two senior engineers / mentors who have now retired. Their knowledge formed the based for Jords modern design tools. The majority of the equipment worked on was heat exchangers, multiple hearth furnaces and solid liquid separation equipment. Engineering packages used included ANSIS, Strand 7&8, Microstation, Autocad, Solidworks and Inventor, including excel calculation design.

Responsible for the staff, budgets, profit margins, stock procurement, scheduling and production. This role included internal and external sales. The role involved working close with the operators to keep the old machine productive when many of the parts were unobtainable. I developed many custom solutions during this time.

Design Draughter

I was responsible for layout for small to million dollar industrial kitchens, conversion and implementation of Italian models into the Australian product lines. Close co-ordination with the workshop on design and manufacturing of components.

The first part of this year was spent at the Apprentice training center for the Australian Consulting Engineers Association. The role involved layout and detailing work on coal preparation plants. In particular piping layout, both in Autocad and on the drawing board. Equipment worked on were spirals, screens, thickeners etc.
