Todd Zoellick was one of U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings' top officials for Region V, which encompasses Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Zoellick was appointed by President George W. Bush in 2005 and visited over a thousand schools in all six states to meet with students, teachers, parents, and administrators to celebrate their achievements, explain federal education policy, and be a bridge between policy makers in Washington, DC and practitioners in the Midwest. He also regularly worked with education, business, and civic organizations, and met with elected and appointed officials throughout the region. In addition, Region V was responsible for assisting students and school districts affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 through matching their needs with items donated by schools, families, and organizations.
