One Love Prison Meditation Project
The problem we are addressing is the consequences from a lack of rehabilitation in prisons. Over 90% of those in prison will be released and face the challenge of successfully returning to the community. Incarcerated people face a much higher rate of anxiety, depression, feelings of isolation, substance abuse, and violence. These issues are also experienced by prison staff. The US Government's Council of Economic Advisors(CEA) recently released a report finding that programs that address incarcerated person's mental health and substance abuse would reduce the cost of crime and incarceration to the taxpayer. It is our moral conviction that all people should be given opportunities to heal and increase their well-being. Meditation is proven to reduce anxiety and help with addiction. More deeply, our students give testimony that our meditation classes inspire them to see the best in themselves and others. $25 a month provides a meditation class to an incarcerated person in need.
