Since 1971 the Native American Support Program at UIC has been the oldest state institution founded by Native Americans in Illinois for the support, advocacy, and education for Native American students. UIC now offers in-state tuition to all undergraduates from tribal nations, as does our Medical school. UIC also is widening its efforts to recruit and retain Native American students. Ph.D in English with focus in American Indian Studies. Over 20 years experience as a university scholar and instructor in multicultural literatures and Native American Studies. Currently serving UIC as Interim Director of the Native American Support Program (NASP) plus as a Pre-Health Advisor under LAS serving the entire UIC pre-health community.

Serving over 10,000 undergraduates, about 1/3 of which are first generation college students, with connections and languages from across the globe. Most of our students are pell-eligible and most of them plan to work in the healthcare sector. UIC is perhaps the most diverse pre-health institution in the United States.

■ Created and executed new courses in Native American film and cultural studies.■ Planned collaborative international Native American writer’s conference(Returning the Gift 2012) in collaboration with UW-Milwaukee, Indian CommunitySchool, and Woodland Pattern Poetry bookstore.■ Assisted in revising the undergraduate and graduate majors of the EnglishDepartment.■ Developed funding mechanism to bring Native American speakers, writers, andfilmmakers such as Joy Harjo and Robert Warrior to the Milwaukee area.■ Advised local stakeholders on indigenous rights, history, and populations.■ Facilitated collaboration between UW-Milwaukee and Marquette on Ojibwelanguage cross-listing.■ Mentored students with a focus on students of color, first-generation students, andthe recruitment and retention of indigenous undergraduates.

■ Assisted in founding the American Indian Center at UNC-CH (2006) and hiring ofits first director, Dr. Clara Sue Kidwell.■ Developed protocols to help the American Indian Center partner with UNCresearchers to compete for National Institute of Health grants providingtranslational work for medical studies impacting Native American communities.■ Developed a freshman seminar that was featured by Wikimedia foundation in theireffort to incorporate Wikipedia into classroom pedagogy (2009):https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meeting:_Using_Wikipedia_as_a_Teaching_Tool■ Funded, Administered, and ran the first ever ‘’Study Abroad’’ summer program inthe Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma (2009) with fundraising and donations fromuniversity and tribal partners.■ Created UNC’s first classes in American Indian Studies, as well as the first minor,major, and graduate program in American Indian Studies.■ Assisted in the expansion of the Department of American Studies from Curriculumstatus (from eight to fifteen faculty members).
