Volunteer Rock Climbing Instructor
Kilnworx Climbing Centre
Stoke-On-Trent, England, United Kingdom
Working in a highly dangerous environment amplified my analytical and meticulous nature. It was necessary to carry out methodical safety checks for everyone in the center, even experienced climbers can make life threatening mistakes with equipment, so it is imperative that one stays alert, and applies constant evaluation to his surroundings. As coach, I taught beginner climbers both the methods used to climb safely by themselves, and to improve their climbing ability. To do this I have to make a connection with my pupil, to understand their goals and develop a plan designed to help them progress. This forward-thinking approach saw great success, shown by the quantifiable improvements made by my pupils, and I feel this attitude carries weight in a professional financial environment, where future planning is essential to organization. I showed good adaptability and consequently was trusted with route setting, meaning I used power tools to re-arrange the climbing holds on the walls to generate new, interesting routes for climbers to climb. This is physically and mentally demanding work under a tight schedule. Due to the risk of injury if done poorly, attention to detail is paramount. I enjoyed the creativity of the role and take great satisfaction in doing a job well. I suggested to the manager that we use social media more to advertise the center and helped him by creating some videos to promote new climbs. Since then, the manager has continued to post advertisements for the center suggesting that my idea was successful. This is an example of the deep investment in my work.
