I think physicians go into Medicine wanting to help people deal with disease and we’re taught diagnosis and treatment in school. But what we read in textbooks and journals doesn’t necessarily happen in reality and we’re left with a certain emptiness as we dole out Rxs for diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol, only to find the patient still gets a heart attack even though the “numbers looked good “. So what’s next?A surgeon takes out a gallbladder or appendix and her work is done . She gets satisfaction for allegedly curing the situation and recommends follow up with primary care .We give antibiotics for infection and inject joints with steroids when they’re in pain. We get satisfaction knowing we helped someone out . But what about chronic diseases?Congestive heart failure, where the treatment dries out your kidneys. You’re so weak from all those meds you barely want to leave the chair. Is this living? Alzheimer’s , where the Medicine is more centered on the caretakers struggles than the actual patient. “Dad was up wandering around last night, yelling and screaming.
