Tom studied at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture Aberdeen where he graduated with distinction. His thesis received several student prizes and was selected to represent SSSoA at the Royal Scottish Academy’s New Contemporaries Exhibition; and received nominations nationally for the BD Class of 2013 and both the RIBA and RIAS Silver Medal’s.In 2013 he joined the Edinburgh based practice Richard Murphy Architects, most notably collaborating on the restoration and conversion of the Grade-A listed William Playfair designed Donaldson's School for the Deaf, Edinburgh. Prior experience saw Tom gain a broad range of experience on small-scale domestic, commercial and public projects whilst working at Ben Cunliffe Architects in the English Lake District. Since joining Somner Macdonald Architects in early 2017, he has seen numerous renovation and extension projects through to completion. Tom finds great enjoyment in the process of making, with particular passion for the craft and material of buildings, producing unexpected designs that challenge preconceptions.
