Retirement was fun for a couple of years. Set a goal to shoot or break par. Did it twice and then asked what next? Back to work at Microsoft working with the Skype Data team on the next generation of telemetry data processing all based on Azure technologies.

Development Manager Nov 2011 to Sep 2015Led and managed a team of 45 software engineers to develop the infrastructure and parallel processing algorithms to produce high resolution 2D and 3D aerial (planes) and terrestrial (cars) imagery for the Microsoft Bing.com mapping web site. This included the design and development of a 313 petabyte, 80,000+ core scalable “big-data” processing center.Image Processing Framework (IPF) Architect – Jan 2009 to Oct 2011Proposed, created and led the design of the IPF data-flow parallel programming framework. Like MapReduce and Hadoop, the IPF enabled the development of highly scalable and parallel programs to be run across 100s to 1000s of nodes in compute cluster. IPF was designed and built on top of Windows Server, Microsoft SQL Server and the .NET Framework. The IPF middleware enabled developers to write highly scalable directed processing graphs over 1000s of Windows Server processing nodes.

Microsoft Virtual Earth (VE) – February 2005 to December 2008Visiting Researcher to the VE Team to assist the team in designing and building the imagery and mapping online storage infrastructure. Co-designed a parallel processing framework to run on a set of loosely coupled cluster of Windows Servers. Worked closely with business operations team to contract with sources of high resolution imagery for the VE web app. Responsible for the discovery of and exclusive contract for oblique imagery, dubbed “Bird’s Eye”, used within Virtual Earth and used by Virtual Earth clients such as Zillow.Sky Server – May 2000 to November 2000Along with Dr. Jim Gray and Dr. Alex Szaley, built the Sky Server database and web application from the TerraServer source code. This became a popular academic research and collaboration site for astronomers from Johns Hopkins University, Cal Tech, and others around the country and globe.Microsoft TerraServer – August 1996 to September 2012Lead Investigator of the TerraServer joint research project to create a database and web application for the hosting of high resolution imagery. The project compiled 1m resolution USGS aerial imagery and declassified Russian satellite imagery into the first seamless presentation of imagery as a map in the internet. The project has been cited as the impetus for imagery as seen on Google Maps, Google Earth, Bing Maps, GlobeXplorer, etc.Bay Area Research Manager – May 1996 to December 2008Established and managed Dr. Jim Gray’s and Gordon Bell’s research lab in San Francisco. Ran the office, interviewed and hired researchers, and managed the relationship with other local offices and engineering centers.

Enterprise Computing Group Led “build versus buy” team for a small to medium scale source code control product. This led to the purchase of One Tree Software, the makers of SourceSafe. Promoted to Group Program Manager and responsible for integrating One Tree Software technology and staff into Microsoft. Led the releases of 3 versions of the product in a two-year span.

San Francisco, CA – Database Advanced Technology Research Team – May 1990 to April 1994Managed Advanced Technology lab focused on advanced technology in support of DEC’s Rdb/VMS relational database product. Responsible for hiring and managing all lab staff on behalf of the lab’s Technical Director – Dr. James Gray. Participated in several projects including the Alpha Sort which set a world record for sorting a tera-byte of data in 1 minute.San Francisco, CA and New York, NY – Professional Software Services, June 1977 to April 1990Held every technical position from Associate Specialist to Senior Program Manager. Managed large-scale cross-site programs; delivered on-site software development projects; provided telephone support to commercial customers; and supported sales staff with RFI/RFP responses, customer presentations, and demonstrations.
