Our 30+ businesses turnover £300m a year across the UK. My role sees me providing support to consultancy, contracting and manufacturing businesses, with a focus on robust commercials, strong financial management and fostering positive working environments for our staff. As the Divisional Finance Partner for the ALPM division of RSK, my day to day role saw me providing timely, incisive and precise information to senior internal stakeholders in order to drive business growth and optimisation with a focus on enhancing working capital and bottom line profitability. Since starting with RSK in 2019, the division grew from £40m to £120m t/o per annum through a mix of acquisition and organic growth of both consultancy and contracting businesses. Working in this fast paced environment means that agile decision making and the ability to prioritise effectively was essential. During my time in this role, I worked with 27 Managing Directors across the ALPM division which generate a combined £120m turnover per annum. Working closely with these businesses to drive efficiencies, synergistic opportunities and engage with local senior teams on commercial decision making was pivotal to our success. As well as working directly with businesses in the division, there was an ongoing need to interact with Group, fulfilling reporting requirements as part of a £1bn turnover business.

Reporting directly to the board, my responsibilities included:- Day to day management of finance function;- Business planning, budgeting and forecasting to drive financial strategy;- Working capital management;- Involvement in the formation/ structuring of new business initiatives and contracts from the outset to ensure they are commercially viable and contribute to the overarching business strategy;- Interrogating the business rationale behind existing processes and seek to enhance the value they provide to the business and the customer;- Implementing new systems and enhancing internal controls and procedures to mitigate finance and business risks whilst driving efficiencies and maximising effectiveness.

Reporting directly to the CFO, my responsibilities included:- Developing and becoming ultimately responsible for the Group’s cash flow forecasting and working capital management including minimising foreign exchange rate risk;- Review and authorisation of all transactions made out of the business;- Understanding and communicating the Group’s corporate cash flows and/ or the business relationships between each entity to different stakeholders including liaising with the sales and contracts teams in respect of structuring new work/ revenue streams;- Proactively liaising with the Group’s largest suppliers to discuss unfavourable business terms and, in changing such agreements, promote the company’s working capital cycle and enhance the liquidity position;- Projects included introducing open banking to the Group and the introduction of a short term asset management facility to maximise returns on positive cash flow.

I worked within the Restructuring Services team at Mazars, managing a portfolio of personal and corporate formal insolvency appointments. Mazars is an international, integrated and independent organisation specialising in audit, accounting, tax and advisory services with 13,000 professionals in 68 countries. Our team advises Directors of companies in financial difficulty, or their creditors and other stakeholders and attempt to effect turnaround solutions, handling corporate insolvency appointments if the company cannot be saved. This may still, however, result in the business being saved, if it can be sold as a going concern. We also help individuals with debt and personal insolvency problems, and take individual voluntary arrangement and bankruptcy appointments.
