Kettering University (formerly GMI Engineering & Management Institute) is an extraordinary college that prepares leaders (technical and executive) for business and industry. Kettering's unique fully cooperative plan of education, in which all students alternate terms of full-time study with terms of full-time paid professional work experience in industry typically beginning in the freshman year, engages and immerses students in their personal and professional education. Outcomes are typically full time professional employment at graduation or admission to top graduate and professional schools. I had the fun of helping the school establish its first traditional admissions operations and services as Director of Admissions from '87 to '92. Starting in Sept '92 I was able to get engaged in what attracted me to the college, co-op services helping employers and students optimize the opportunities each could present, recruiting employers, and counseling students, and continued covering many research and external reporting roles in the absence of a dedicated institutional researcher. I continued involvement with co-op employers and students until retirement but after the school name was changed to Kettering University in 1997 enrollment research and planning became primary and eventually community college partnerships and articulation .

Pacific Fleet--Active Duty. Ny, Ct And Mi As A Reservist.

Commissioned Ensign USNR Dec ’66 at NAVOCS Newport, RI. Assigned to Pacific Fleet destroyer USS Rupertus as an engineering officer. Qualified as Officer of the Deck, Engineering Officer of the Watch and served as Damage Control Assistant and Repair Division Officer (39 men in 7 engineering skill areas). Combat deployments to Vietnam in '67 and '68. Transferred to Staff, Commander Alaskan Sea Frontier in Kodiak as Ass't Plans Officer and Operations Center Watch Officer. Work involved extensive liaison with Air Force, Army and Canadian Forces commands and personnel. Ready Reserve: After initial assignment with a surface ship augmentation unit was approved for change of designator to Intelligence and began a very rewarding 22-year career serving in 6 units in NY, CT, and MI. A highlight of that career was duty as Commanding Officer of FIRSTEURLANT 0302 a unit with 26 officers and 53 enlisted men and women. Retired from the Navy Reserve in 1993 as a Captain.

SUNY Maritime College is one of the very few undergraduate professional colleges in the US. All students were cadets preparing for the professional license as an officer for the Merchant Marine (Coast Guard issued license to operate ships of unlimited size on the oceans of the world) while they earned BS degrees is various fields of engineering, Naval Architecture, Transportation Management, Meteorology & Oceanography or Computer Science. Many graduates became officers in the Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, NOAA. Graduates typically grew into positions of major responsibility soon after graduation in whatever endeavor they followed at sea or ashore in industry, government service or the professions. It was a privilege to admit the first women as cadets to an academy in the US. We enrolled many international students.In addition to my responsibilities as Director of Admissions I also served as liaison to the Alumni Association and the National Assoc of Maritime Academy Alumni Associations, and taught damage control and emergency response on the college training ship during parts of several summer sea terms. Maritime was part of the State University of New York System and I was an active leader in university wide admissions and enrollment management committees and initiatives.

ESF is one of the Specialized Colleges of the State University of New York offering BS, MS and PhD degrees in many fields of science, engineering, landscape architecture and resources management. I was responsible for transfer student admissions, counseling, evaluation of transfer credits and articulation with all two-year colleges in New York State. Our challenge was ensuring quality and readiness of transfer students -- within one semester transfer students equaled and many out performed native students. At that time ESF was the most competitive public college in the USA to gain admission to as a freshman. About half of transfers came from 2- year colleges and half from 4-year colleges and universities. We took over responsibility for admission services for the New York State Ranger School when the school shifted from a one-year 56 credit hour certificate program to an AAS program that required all students to present a specific package of transfer credits so they could continue with the one year residential forest technology program. Working with Academic Deans and Dept Chairs, most of the 32 community colleges in NY and the 6 SUNY 2-year Ag & Tech Colleges agreed to provide priority registration for needed classes we identified to students admitted to the Forest Technology program. The model proved so effective that a year after I left for the Maritime College it was expanded and ESF became upper division and graduate only, saving the school several million dollars/ year in accessory instruction fees for courses otherwise taken at Syracuse University.
