The Canal & River Trust is a charity entrusted with 2,000 miles of waterways in England and Wales having taken on responsibility from British Waterways in 2012. I am the Trust's Legal & Governance Director, part of the Executive team reporting into the Trust's Chief Executive.The Trust's Legal team advises on all areas of the law that affect the Trust's activities, particularly environmental and planning law, charity law, property law and the Trust's own legislation, some of which extends back to the 18th century when the canals were first built. Our Governance team co-ordinates the work of the Board of Trustees (including the various Board Committees) and the Council of Members, working closely with our National Advisory Groups and Regional Advisory Boards, as well as having Company Secretarial and information compliance (freedom of information and data protection) responsibility.
