Throughout my career, I've journeyed through all aspects of the internet.It all started with an interest in website design when I was back in high school - the internet was so much simpler back then, before the days of javascript frameworks and css - everything was built with HTML and tables. The marquee tag added spice to all my websites.Just after high school, I transitioned my focus to web application development - applications were so much simpler then, just moving user input around, and there was a scripting language written specifically for web app programming that was just coming into its prime: PHP. My friends and family LOVED filling out all the forms I made.When I started my professional career, I got a job with a local ISP, and that was when I ceased being merely a consumer of the internet, and I moved behind the scenes. Connecting to the internet was so much simpler back then - hook up your phone line to your computer, have it play some noises down the line to another computer, and BAM - You've got mail! I spent time doing technical support for residential and business dialup and DSL connections, then T1 lines and metro ethernet. I took calls in a phone support center. I went to peoples' houses to troubleshoot their phone lines and computer troubles. I ran wires in office buildings from telephone closets to computer rooms. I configured backhaul devices and trunks. I literally built and maintained people's access to the internet.After that, came the data centers. The cloud was so much simpler back then - you'd bring your comptuers to the data center, plug them into the internet, and there was your cloud. I spent a lot of time out amongst the noisy CRAC units, losing my hearing, my hair, and (quite literally) breaking my back, physically building the cloud. But customers didn't just want their remote hands teams to put stuff in the rack, they wanted us to install and configure operating systems and firewalls and applications.So again I went back to the server side of things - honing my Windows and Linux admin skills thanks to our company's in-built dedicated server platform ("we'll provide the hardware and the cloud!"). Linux was a lot simpler then - no fancy container-driven architectures or serious virtualization. Everyone ran one application (or suite of related software for one application) per physical server. I spent my time administering web and mail servers, writing automation to help track management and changes, and training others on how to use it.Then came the network, and that began a whole new adventure.
