In a recent year-long engagement with the North of England Commissioning Support, I spearheaded the development of an innovative, metadata-driven big data solution. Utilizing Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Lake, and other Azure-native tools, this project seamlessly integrated disparate data sets from primary care systems. The result was a comprehensive and centralized repository that transformed fragmented data into a unified, accessible resource for all primary care data needs. This initiative not only streamlined data accessibility but also enhanced decision-making processes within primary care services.

During my tenure as Product Lead / Lead Data Engineer for the National Data Resource, I steered multiple high-impact projects through the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, I spearheaded the development of the Cohort Identification System, a critical component that provided essential data to the Welsh Immunisation System. This system played a pivotal role in the strategic prioritization of vaccinations across the Welsh population, ensuring timely and efficient vaccine rollout.Additionally, I led the creation of the COVID-19 daily situation report system, which aggregated and analysed data from all hospitals in Wales. This vital information was synthesized and disseminated daily to key stakeholders, including the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) and various government and healthcare entities, supporting pivotal decision-making during the crisis. My leadership in these projects involved extensive use of SQL in both cloud and on-premise environments, demonstrating my ability to manage and manipulate large datasets under critical circumstances.

As the Business Intelligence and Health Analytics Lead, I had the privilege of overseeing the Enterprise Data Warehouse and the associated data pipelines and models for NHS Wales. My role was pivotal in optimising the use of clinical data across Health Boards, social care, and government bodies, significantly enhancing decision-making processes. My expertise facilitated deeper insights and strategic analytics, enabling more informed healthcare solutions.In addition, I played a crucial leadership role in the NHS Wales Value Based Healthcare program for Digital Health and Care Wales. As a key stakeholder in a multi-agency team, I leveraged data to drive improvements in patient outcomes, underscoring the potential of data-centric approaches in healthcare. I was also responsible for administering the Power BI service for NHS Wales, ensuring robust data visualization and reporting capabilities that supported various healthcare initiatives.

As the Lead Data Engineer for Swansea Bay University Health Board, I led a high-stakes, time-sensitive project centred around the strategic demerger of the Princess of Wales Hospital from Swansea Bay, transitioning it into the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. This complex initiative required the meticulous decoupling and integration of extensive clinical data between health boards. My role was critical in ensuring the seamless transfer of vital data, maintaining data integrity, and minimizing disruption to healthcare services.I employed advanced business analysis techniques and specialized in data migration strategies to manage this massive undertaking effectively. Utilizing SQL and SQL Server Integration Services extensively, I executed precise data handling that upheld the highest standards of data security and compliance. This project not only demonstrated my capability to manage large-scale data transitions but also my ability to deliver under pressure, ensuring continuity and excellence in healthcare operations.

In my role as Data Engineer / Information Development Manager for the Welsh Government, I spearheaded a six-month project focused on revolutionizing traditional operational methods and developing essential data pipelines. This initiative was crucial in modernizing the flow of information into and out of the government, enabling enhanced decision-making and operational efficiency.My technical acumen in SQL was instrumental in the execution of this project, alongside proficient use of C# and Visual Basic to automate and streamline processes. This role underscored my ability to identify and implement technological innovations that significantly improve governmental data handling and workflow systems.

As a Senior Information Analyst at the NHS Wales Delivery Unit, an integral arm of the Welsh Government, I played a key role in supporting Health Boards in their operational and strategic delivery. My responsibilities included harnessing the power of data science to drive improvements in healthcare services. I extensively used R and Python to develop and execute sophisticated data science projects, including:Discrete Event Simulation: I engineered a detailed simulation of an Emergency Department to predict outcomes and optimize operations, enhancing service delivery and patient care.Time Series Forecasting: Employed advanced forecasting models to predict trends in healthcare needs, enabling proactive resource management.Linear Regression Analyses: Conducted analyses to understand and model healthcare dynamics, assisting in strategic planning and policy development.In addition to these projects, I was responsible for monitoring both scheduled and unscheduled care, crafting insightful reports, and managing dynamic Power BI dashboards that provided critical analytics and visualizations to stakeholders. This role underscored my ability to blend analytical rigor with practical insights, significantly contributing to the enhancement of healthcare services across Wales.

In a pioneering role as the UK’s first Macmillan Professional Clinical Data Engineer, I developed and implemented cutting-edge solutions to enhance patient care in oncology. Sponsored by Macmillan Cancer Support, this position allowed me to directly contribute to improving the lives of patients facing critical health challenges.One of my key achievements was the creation of an early warning system for Oncology Nurses. This system was designed to alert nurses when Acute Oncology patients presented at the Emergency Department. By enabling early intervention, we significantly streamlined patient care, ensuring that vulnerable patients received timely and specialized attention. This initiative not only improved patient outcomes but also enhanced the efficiency of hospital operations.I am immensely proud of the role I played in this ground-breaking service, which set new standards for patient care in oncology and demonstrated the potential of data-driven interventions in clinical settings.
