Profile bio

About Tom Esposito

I am an astronomer splitting time between two positions, both focused on exoplanet and circumstellar disk science. As an assistant researcher in the UC Berkeley Astronomy Department and a member of the Gemini Planet Imager Exoplanet Survey (GPIES) team, I discover and characterize exoplanets and the circumstellar disks of rock, ice, and gas that are linked to their formation. By directly imaging and then modeling this disk material I learn about the formation and evolution of planetary systems that can be like or unalike our Solar System. As an observer, I also use the Keck telescope and Hubble Space Telescope to study these types of systems. As a research assistant at the SETI Institute, I am leading the processing and analysis of exoplanet transit observations made by the Unistellar eVscope citizen science network. This is a global community of observers using consumer telescopes to detect known exoplanets and refine their ephemerides for more efficient future observation and characterization by large space-based and ground-based telescopes. Additionally, I am in charge of the Unistellar science data pipeline for transit, asteroid occultation, and direct asteroid observations. Separately, I am also testing and enhancing PSF-subtraction algorithms for exoplanet and circumstellar disk detection in high contrast imaging from the Gemini Planet Imager. My past research experience also includes assisting in the design of an infrared imager for an adaptive optics system on a 10-m class telescope.Specialties: Astronomy/Astrophysics, High-contrast Imaging, Time-series Analysis, Image Processing, Multidimensional Modeling, Data Reduction, Adaptive Optics

Listed skills include Data Analysis, Python, Research, Image Processing, and 25 others.

Space Science Principal

Current

San Francisco, California, United States

Jul 2021 - Present

Assistant Researcher In Exoplanet Astronomy

Current

Berkeley, California, United States

I transitioned to a part-time assistant researcher investigating circumstellar disks, exoplanets, and the interactions between them. My work centers on high-contrast, near-infrared imaging of these planetary systems using instruments aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) in Chile, and NIRC2 at W.M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii, and.

Sep 2020 - Present

Postdoctoral Scholar In Exoplanet Astronomy

Berkeley, California, United States

Transitioned to part-time as I started part-time work at the SETI Institute.

Feb 2020 - Sep 2020

Postdoctoral Scholar In Exoplanet Astronomy

Berkeley, CA

I am a postdoctoral researcher investigating circumstellar disks, exoplanets, and the interactions between them. My work centers on high-contrast, near-infrared imaging of these planetary systems using instruments such as the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) in Chile and NIRC2 at W.M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii. One way I do this is as a member of the GPI.

Sep 2015 - Feb 2020

Exoplanet Research Assistant

Current

Mountain View, California, United States

Detecting exoplanets through transit observations with the Unistellar eVscope citizen science network of small telescopes. I am also testing and improving methods for exoplanet and circumstellar disk detection via high contrast imaging with the Gemini Planet Imager.

Feb 2020 - Present

Astronomy Ph.D. Candidate

Los Angeles, CA

As an astronomy Ph.D. student, my research focused on high-contrast imaging of circumstellar disks and exoplanets using advanced direct imaging techniques. I combined observations with sophisticated image-processing and modeling methods to investigate the state and evolution of extrasolar planetary systems. I was also a member of the UCLA Infrared Lab and.

Sep 2009 - Aug 2015

Planetarium & Telescope Coordinator

Los Angeles, CA

My responsibilities included management of the planetarium and telescopes at UCLA. In detail, planetarium management duties included scheduling shows, presenting shows, organizing events, maintaining equipment, training volunteers, developing show content, procuring funding, engaging donors, budgeting, advertising, and maintaining the website & social.

Jun 2011 - Jun 2015

Independent Researcher In Astrophysics

I researched ultra-high energy cosmic rays as a member of the New York Schools Cosmic Particle Telescope project at NYU. My work consisted of setting up equipment and hardware for a prototype water tank muon detection system, writing data analysis software, and running particle shower simulations using the HERWIG code. I also assisted on another project.
