• A key leader in the U.S. Navy’s office for national security law in the Pentagon, providing strategic legal advice to the Secretary of the Navy, the Chief of Naval Operations and all Combatant Commanders.

I deployed to the Arabian Gulf and Indian Ocean as part of an operation to support the security of UK interests in the Middle East and South Asia. This included support to counter-terrorist operations in Iraq and Syria and the seizure of wholesale quantities of narcotics bound for the UK and the Netherlands.

• Provided advice to NATO HQ on all aspects of the potential naval response to Russia’s annexation of Crimea, including complex and historically challenging advice on sovereignty, jurisdiction, international straits and.
• Provided real-time advice to Ship and Task Group Commanders on the international law relating to counter-terrorism and counter-piracy, including multi-jurisdictional rules of evidence and detainee and prisoner transfer.
• Principal legal advisor to the NATO Shipping Centre, NATO’s maritime commercial partnering arm.
• As NATO’s principal maritime law specialist, routinely presented at high profile speaking engagements and training events to government bodies, international organisations and NGOs.

• Developed excellent working knowledge of fraud and bribery legislation and case law.
• Researched numerous issues in relation to LIBOR; investigations into the fraudulent sale of carbon credits; and a large-scale investigation and trial arising from alleged cross-border corruption in Scotland’s oil and.
• Independent practice across the full range of criminal litigation in both the Crown and Magistrates Courts, including numerous Magistrates Court trials.
