Whiff is focused on making test equipment for scientific researchers. Our niche is computer controlled electro-mechanical devices developed at research universities. We generally opensource our designs to our customers.A key problem in scientific research is reproducing experimental results. This is complicated by researchers making custom equipment for specific purposes. Frequently the design and construction of that equipment varies from lab to lab, impacting the ability to reproduce experimental conditions. Whiff builds the equipment as designed by the original scientific team and provides it to research groups hoping to reproduce the original results and advance the technique. These markets are small, but the work is interesting and varied.I founded and managed a diagnostic imaging center in Philadelphia, invented and licensed a device for the capture and control of aerosolized drugs used to treat AIDS, conceptualized and developed a new intracardiac imaging system for guiding catheters in the heart, invented a system for improving ultrasound guided biopsies in the bladder, and created and developed a device for the care of diabetic foot disorders. My chief skills are in bringing business acumen to technology development and in being able to “bridge the gap” between technology and markets, focusing technology development on market driven solutions. I like REALLY early stage things, both businesses and concepts. I can get ideas and concepts from nowhere to somewhere.I have worked in sales, marketing and product development in the medical device industry, and spent 10 years at the University of Pennsylvania handling technology related "stuff" for medical and engineering applications.
