Profile bio

About Tom Freeman

I am a biologist with a long-standing experience of post-genomic science. My career has spanned being a physiologist with an interest in gastrointestinal function and cell biology, through to the current day where I might best be described as a systems biologist, with interests in a number of different biological areas, but primarily innate immunity. Throughout my work, there has been an underlying interest in technology and seeking to make it better and I have had an interest in translating the fruits of academic research through to commercial exploitation. During my time at the Sanger Institute, Cambridge I filed three patents, one based on improvements to a molecular biology technique for single-cell analysis, another on novel genes associated with apoptosis, and a third described the design of a microscope slide processor that was licensed to and produced by Amersham for microarray processing. I am also a Founder and former Director of two University of Edinburgh spin-out companies, Fios Genomics Ltd., specializing in genomic data analysis services, and Kajeka Ltd., a company building a visual analytics platform developed in my laboratory for the analysis of many types of big data.

Listed skills include Genomics, Computational Biology, Systems Biology, Bioinformatics, and 19 others.

Kajeka Ltd. was based on network analysis software developed in my laboratory over a 10 year period (www.biolayout.org). It is a University of Edinburgh spin-out company founded in 2015. Kajeka supplied big data solutions to analysts and enterprises. The powerful network software developed by the company makes it easy to see connections and understand patterns within big data. It can reveal information you didn’t know was present and would never have looked for, letting you to draw the right conclusions. The software has now been made open-source and free: https://graphia.app/
