Instructor Of Biological Science

Lexington, Kentucky Area

Solely responsible for teaching six sections of introductory biology lab to freshman biology majors about: behavioral ecology, climate change biology, central dogma of molecular biology, phylogenetics and speciation. Training students to distill primary scientific literature and synthesize an impactful oral presentation and an op-ed piece for our local newspaper. Created, designed and taught two senior-level seminars that explored the History of Regeneration and Scientific Policy Issues.

Aug 2018 - Jul 2019

Postdoctoral Scholar In Tissue Regeneration

Lexington, Kentucky

I led a team to test biological trade-offs between immunity and the ability to regenerate tissue in mammals. This project was an international endeavor that required use of wild African Spiny mice (Acomys spp.) caught in Kenya and captive spiny mice in the USA. The spiny mouse is a remarkable rodent that can regenerate tissue after injury. I characterized the immune response after injury and helped lay the groundwork for understanding the genetic and cellular basis of regeneration in mammals.

Jul 2014 - Jul 2019

Graduate Student / Teaching Assistant

Lexington, Kentucky

My research project tested the hypothesis that autophagy is necessary for the development of mammalian male and female gametes. I generated several transgenic mouse lines to study the effect of autophagy by conditionally knocking out the genes Atg7 and Beclin-1. I discovered that autophagy is necessary in hormone producing cells of the ovary for progesterone production during pregnancy. This produced two publications. As a PhD student I helped manage the transition of the lab to the University of Kentucky from Texas A&M. I met with product representatives to purchase and organize new equipment and reagents. Responsible for setting up new standard operating procedures for our molecular and cell culture assays.Courses Taught:Introductory Biology Lab (BIO 155), Genetics (BIO 304), Cell Biology (BIO 315)

Aug 2008 - May 2014

Graduate Student In Genetics

College Station, Texas

I quantified gene expression knockdown in bovine blastocysts by synthesizing, characterizing and using lentivirus with Charles Long. I generated a conditional knockout mouse for the Mir27a microRNA gene with Edmund Rucker. I characterized Red Drum microsatellite markers in Spotted Sea Trout by developing microsatellite PCR screens with John Gold. Published one manuscript.

Aug 2007 - Jul 2008

Research Assisstant In Tissue Regeneration

Urbana-Champaign, Illinois Area

Developed my own molecular biology and primary cell culture techniques. Tested the cellular physiology associated with cartilage regeneration in arthritic lesions using mouse, horse, pig and human cells. Assisted with cloning and sequencing the horse Aggrecan gene. Determined a cocktail to promote proliferation of tenocytes and chondrocytes in cell culture.
