The Marine Innovation Unit (MIU) is designed to accelerate advanced technology development for the Marine Corps. MIU partners with Combat Development & Integration and Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory to support the Secretary of the Navy, Commandant of the Marine Corps, and Major Subordinate Commanders.

Through the Department of Defense Skillbridge Program, I was afforded the opportunity to work here during the last 3 months of my active duty service. During this internship, I participated in several M&As and Ventures amounting to over $20M in funding while collaborating and strategizing with senior executives that spanned several business units and functions.

• Led a team of 12 in the review of counterterrorism missions and civil-military engagements (300+ to date), ensuring proper risk mitigation, legal authority, communication structure, and logistical support, thereby reducing terrorist presence in the Horn of Africa and improving Somalian government sovereignty; briefed the commanding general and his staff weekly.• Pioneered the implementation of a new metadata storage platform, uploading 3,000+ operations and events; leveraged the database to inform congressional members immediately following three crises in Africa, influencing theater-specific policy. • Qualified and designated for Top Secret security clearance in order to plan mission-critical initiatives on the African continent.• Earned the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal for a continual commitment to community service over four years.

• Trained 25 senior staff on monitoring protocols and reporting procedures covering 1,200 personnel in 16 African countries, ensuring timely and accurate information flow to the commanding general on immediate threats to U.S. forces or personnel.• Implemented a new alert system for the command to conduct staff recalls during emergencies and developed step-by-step operating instructions for fellow staff members to respond more expediently to seven crises on the African continent.

• Selected out of four peers to serve as second-in-command of a 180-Marine infantry unit; developed a six-month training program, mentored the new platoon commanders and coordinated the logistics of eight major training exercises, resulting in a successful deployment, operations, and combat readiness during an 18-month cycle in the South East Asia Region.• Planned and executed 12 high-risk live-fire training events and integrated complex aircraft support during a 1000-person exercise, coordinating the supply logistics, mitigating the risks specific to each range, and leading communications with headquarters. • Directed a headquarters team of 12 Marines, applying lean concepts to the training and equipment process; drove a 50% increase in advanced school graduates, a 30% reduction in outdated inventory, and a 20% reduction in maintenance hours. • Nominated by peers as Lead Mentor for 32 Lieutenants; planned seven events, including sessions with senior officers and distinguished guests, improving the personal development and leadership of the junior officers. • Managed $3.2M of sensitive equipment while executing two multi-million-dollar transfers, furthering unit’s preparedness to train with allies and immediately deploy as regional security cooperation / contingency response effort

• Led 40 Marines on a six-month deployment, resulting in a more tactically proficient, disciplined, and cohesive unit capable of providing training, security, and humanitarian assistance to partners and allies in the Kyushu Region. • Educated 200+ Marines annually on sexual assault awareness and prevention as a Uniformed Victim Advocate.• Partnered with 100 Korean Special Reconnaissance Marines during a six-week winter training package in the Pyeongchang Mountains, sharing best practices that enhanced Marine Corps’ interoperability and security in the peninsula.• Integrated Australian, Korean, and Malaysian allies into Marine units to conduct multilateral amphibious operations during the world’s preeminent biannual maritime exercise, fostering cooperative relationships with partner forces across the pacific.
