I am an engineer with a broad variety of interests, skills, and talents. On the surface it looks like I am just a computer guy or the cyber guy. My resume reflects that, as I have a broad range of experience with technology, including Windows system administration, data acquisition, networking, software development/testing, system virtualization. Overall, systems interest me, and just not computer systems. I like to see how different pieces work together, looking for ways to make it better and more useful. I like to dig into the systems and processes, really get to learn them. I like to become an expert on the systems or process, and be able to explain to others how they work. Most of my hobbies and outside interests involve systems or processes that I like to learn, analyze and improve. Whether it is working on my family farm, brewing beer, gardening, food preservation, or home renovation, these all provide outlets for me to continue learning. How many computer guys can brew a doppelbock, rewire and re-plumb the house, weld up broken equipment or grow a nice selection of vegetables? These are all things I have learned over the years. I continue to look for learning opportunities. My life on the farm has taught me that you don't always get to set your schedule. The weather is a big influence, when things are fit to work, you need to be working, and overcome any obstacles that may get in the way. This has translated well into my career as a computer system engineer at a power plant that runs 24/7/365 for two years straight. The goal is to keep things working for Operations, so that they can safely and effectively operate the plant. This means being able to quickly develop solutions to problems that can be implemented and minimize downtime. Sometimes it requires coming in at 0200 to get a broken power supply replaced, and leading the organization to get it done in a timely manner.
