Tom Isaacs is a contemporary artist, academic and curator.As an artist, Tom works primarily in the fields of performance and textile art. His work explores themes of mental illness, mortality, and the human condition, and he engages with psychoanalytic theory, philosophy, religious and ritual practices, and art history. In 2022, Tom completed a practice-led PhD at Sydney College of the Arts, the University of Sydney, researching the relationship between ritual, psychoanalysis and body art, and how these different streams of thought address the problem of alienation. He has been working at the University of Sydney as a sessional academic since 2022.Tom recently completed Big Anxiety Research Centre (BARC)'s short course on creative approaches to working with trauma and mental health. He is currently participating in the second year of Case Incubator, a professional development, knowledge sharing and mentorship program led by the CAD Factory and funded by the Create NSW Service Needs Strategic Fund.Tom's upcoming projects include: 'EARTH', Articulate Project Space, Leichhardt; 'Spirit Wave', Art Space on the Concourse, Chatswood; 'Together but otherwise a(part)', Articulate Project Space, Leichhardt; 'Ad/dressing the Wound' (solo), Ellipsis Gallery, Woolloomooloo; artist-in-residence at the Rex Cramphorn Studio, Camperdown.
