I pride myself on my ability to think critically, to account for every possible avenue of inquiry and come to a wholly informed conclusion. Nowhere has this skill been better demonstrated than in my undergraduate final year thesis. This project was the culmination of all that I had learned throughout my education, an exemplar of my research, critical thinking, time-management and self-organisation skills and for my effort I was granted a local award at the University of Reading, the Tina Negus award.However, one area that hadn’t been tested very much during those last three years was my interpersonal and communication abilities. I have a decent of amount of experience utilising these skills, such as completion of the NCS in 2015, and I often used to lead the conversation during A level Philosophy; but it had been a few years since then and I felt myself becoming secluded while I focused on my studies.So entering postgraduate study, I challenged myself to engage more with my peers. I’m glad to say I was quite successful and was even able to get some managerial experience under my belt when I organised a tour of the specimen collection facilities for my class.It was also during this time that I started to burn out from academic study.Reflecting on my experiences, I realised that in academia months would go by with a lot of uncertainty in how a project would turn out. Conversely, in previous volunteering roles each satisfied customer was a clear indication that I had done a good job. This constant, immediate work satisfaction was what I was lacking at university, and is what I have been seeking out since completing my Master’s.A training course in retail and hospitality at Battersea proved to be a very strong starting point, bolstering my confidence and even giving me some experience leading a group, it was just the kind of work I was looking for.So now I am looking to enter the retail and customer service sector full time.If you are seeking a passionate, well-educated retail assistant feel free to get in touch. As a small on-site team, we each have a lot of responsibility both in helping customers feel welcome in the store and in maintaining the store itself.Duties include:- Processing transactions- Engaging with customers to advise and recommend products that best suit their needs- Maintaining the shop floor to ensure that it is both visually appealing and displays as great a range of our products as it can support.- Keeping account of stock levels so that in store stock doesn't run out, increasing or decreasing replenishment levels where necessary.- Keeping account of cash intake, banking excess of the float when necessary.- Assembling display furniture, both to put it on the shop floor as well as to have personal experience with assembling company products to be able to advise customers on difficulty of assembly.- Processing stock deliveries, updating the stock on the system when expected stock change is different from actual stock change.- Keeping an active mind on all customer enquiries being relayed between us and head office to ensure that customers are informed about their purchase as soon as possible.
