I hold the position of Professor of Environemental Geochemistry at University of Helsinki, Department of Geosciences and Geography. My position involves research, teaching and public outreach. From 2018-2023 I was also Academy of Finland Research Fellow. I run the Environmental Geochemistry group, which includes several postdoc and PhD-level researchers. We study the elements that are essential for life (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and others), and how they are distributed in lakes and marine systems. In particular, we try to understand how human activities have altered the cycles of these elements and how we can act to sustain healthy ecosystems in the future. The group is a direct descendent of the Aquatic Biogeochemistry Research Unit (ABRU) from my earlier role at the Viikki campus of University of Helsinki. The research group has several key channels of funding supporting its research activities. As well as two projects from the Academy of Finland we are currently supported by the Coastclim Centre with funding from the Nottbeck Foundation, Lake Vesijärvi Foundation in Lahti, China Scholarship Council, EDUFI, Renlund Foundation and additional sources. The main focus areas of our research are eutrophied Finnish lakes and the coastal zone of the Baltic Sea. As well as understanding biogeochemical processes in these systems, we are searching for solutions to environmental problems, including techniques to recapture and recycle phosphorus.
