Involved in the startup of a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform for construction specialty contractors to manage their job workflow from beginning to end. The prototype was developed over the course of 10 years at my legacy company, Rainier Asphalt & Concrete, in Seattle, WA. Now we seek to share it with the rest of the country and beyond.

The beginnings were very humble. For the first year and a half, it was just me, a ¾ ton pickup and a seal coating tote that I got for free from a supplier. In the early years, I seal coated mostly residential driveways, then moved into commercial sites that got progressively larger. In 2002, I hired our first employee, Mark Machinski, who now serves as our General Manager. After our founding in 2000, for several years we operated out of mini storage facilities. Our first formal “yard” was in Issaquah for a short time, and we finally settled into our current North Bend space in fall 2007.As the company grew, we began to take on more comprehensive projects that moved us beyond just seal coating. As such, we began to do our own line striping in 2003, then added asphalt patching in 2007. A big transition happened in October 2007 when we purchased one of our subcontractors, RS West Enterprises in Enumclaw. This introduced concrete work to our repertoire, along with hard surface restoration for utility contractors, which is now our single largest customer market segment. Ron West, the former owner of that company, is still with us today as the head of our Utility Restoration Division.Since that time, we have continued to add to our service offering to meet our customers’ needs. We purchased our own curbing machine in 2009 and bought our first paving machine in December 2010 for the following season. We have since bought two more full-size paving machines, for a total of three, and the asphalt paving part of the business represents our greatest opportunity for future growth. In 2015, we launched our own internal traffic control division.It hasn’t all been about exponential growth, however. The great recession of 2008-2010 was a difficult time. But we stuck together and kept our key people in place for the growth that would ensue when times got better. Since the bottom of the recession, we’ve been growing an average of 25 percent a year. I see good times ahead.
