I have continued to develop myself as a Civil Engineer in another company in South Africa since 2014. My role has been primarily as Project Leader on a number of projects, including the redevelopment of an air force training base in Centurion, the construction of 8km of pipeline in Midrand and feasibility studies of numerous mall developments across Southern Africa. As Project Leader, my role has developed into more of the management side of the industry. I am responsible for the financial aspects of projects as well as overseeing designs of junior Engineers who report to me. As a client facing member of the team, I regularly interact with clients, selling the capabilities of not only my team but of the company as a whole.

I took the opportunity to work abroad within Arup at the beginning of 2012. Since moving to South Africa, I have further developed my design skills, focusing mainly on design within Autodesk Civil 3D. I have taken a much greater responsibility within projects, often being the lead designer and coordinator on a number of jobs. My team work, project management and coordination skills have been developed through working on large multi discipline projects by taking an active project managers role in the construction of seven toll plazas across Zimbabwe. I continue to work on projects of all sizes and am thoroughly enjoying the challenges that working in a different culture brings.

I worked as part of the Site Development team in Newcastle for eighteen months, undertaking infrastructure design for multidisciplinary projects. I worked on a number of challenging projects, both locally and internationally, delivering quality designs and solutions to a range of different clients. My main project responsibility during this time was service coordination for a large scale development called Heart of Doha located in the Middle-East. Within my role I was responsible for working closely with clients located internationally and undertaking careful coordination with a multitude of design teams.

I worked in a Civil Engineering Consultancy based in Gosforth in Tyne and Wear during the final two years of my studies when on vacation from university. Upon graduation, I took up the full time role of Graduate Engineer. My responsibilities included drainage design using WinDES, CAD work, report writing, cut and fill design using PDS and flood mapping using HEC-RAS. I worked as part of the Civils team whose responsibilities include drainage design, section 278 agreements and flood risk assessments. I worked to deliver a wide range of projects such as Transport House in Newcastle University and Washington Galleries, which is a shopping centre in Washington. I enjoyed working within the engineering sector and the job encouraged me to pursue a chartership with the Industry of Civil Engineers.
