About Tom Painter
I have been involved in the design, fabrication and testing of high-field superconducting magnets and their associated cryogenics for research purposes and also for fusion energy systems since 1989 including cable-in-conduit (CIC) magnets, NMR magnets and high-temperature superconducting magnets. Of these, I have had the most experience with cable-in-conduit systems including the United States Demonstration Poloidal Field Coil (US-DPC) that was built at MIT and tested at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute in Naka, Japan; the 45T Hybrid, which set and continues to hold the world record for highest field DC magnet since 1999 at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL); and the Series-Connected Hybrid Outsert Coils, one of which has been built for the Helmholtz Centrum in Berlin, one of which has been built for the NHMFL, and one of which has been built for the Nijmegan Magnet Laboratory; and finally founded and ran a private business, High Performance Magnetics, which produced Nb3Sn CIC conductor for the Toroidal Field coils for ITER, an international clean energy experiment in France that aims to demonstrate the ability to produce a commercially viable fusion reactor. For the last 7 years I have been working on high temperature superconducting REBCO coils including the all-superconducting 32 T coil presently operating at the MagLab. Presently I am serving as the Interim Director of the Magnet Science and Technology division at the MagLab, a group of approximately 35 professionals, including 13 faculty members.
