Led Process Development, Material Supply and Material Science teams, to devise and implement materials research strategy to effectively support CDT's Display & Lighting programs and to deliver improved Polymer-OLED materials (Organic Light Emissive Device).Responsibilities:• Part of Management Team (of 5) responsible for the Operational & HSE Management of whole site (~50 employees).• Direct line management responsibility for 11 scientists (synthetic chemistry & analytical chemistry) & 1 purchasing/lab support role.• Strategy and implementation of research plans for above teams.• Polymers process development, optimisation & control for the research group, internal material supply (monomers & polymers).• Management of FTE & fee for service chemistry outsourcing projects within UK, East & West Europe and Asia.• Responsible for monitoring/reviewing site consumables budget.Key Deliveries:• Implemented new polymer process with Mw control and fast GPC measurement delivering fully ink jet compatible material set to device pilot line for baseline control.• Proposed & led defect analysis program, successfully identified and subsequently removed two key performance limiting defects responsible for display image sticking. Yielded x2 lifetime performance boost and set QC specifications for commercial product scale-up.• Inventor on key patent portfolio (spans all roles at CDT) e.g. WO2012049462, WO2010119277, WO2010119275, WO2010013002, WO2010010356, WO2009093033, WO2004041901, WO2003035796.• Operational objectives including, implementation of new document management & chemical stock systems, delivered >10% materials budget saving, scale-up committee implementation.

Materials Chemist designing and synthesising new monomer and polymer systems to improve the performance of P-OLED's, Photovoltaic and other Organic Electronic materials.• CDT lead for the successful £3.3M TSB funded 3yr project to develop an OLED Lighting materials & panel (collaboration with Thorn Lighting & Durham University, Feb 07' - Feb 10').• Point of contact with several key European & US customers for lighting & low cost displays. Materials development tailored to meet customer specifications/targets & delivered up to 200g polymer batches. • Track record of designing new materials based on structural/property correlations & QC modelling.• Project planning and implementation from route scouting & selection through to material delivery. • Wide ranging organic synthesis experience with particular expertise in C-C & C-N coupling technologies and routes to functionalised aromatic systems.• Experience in a range of polymerisation techniques with particular expertise in Suzuki Polycondensation.• Mg to Kg-scale capability using standard glass labware to 50L reactors.

During the first twelve months in this position I worked towards developing a new bleach activator detergent particle and formulation technology to improve solubility and aesthetics of a finished granular detergent product. Later I was part of an upstream process innovation team, evaluating emerging technologies for future business application and new FMCG products.• Proposed method & produced initial prototypes leading to the Liquitab product generation (see IP below).• Formulation addition which gave a significant breakthrough in bleach activator solubility and rate of perhydrolysis. Implemented on full plant scale-up.• Small scale test method developed which later employed in a suppliers facility to test a multi-tonne raw material for colour quality.• Solubility analysis of a new finished detergent product leading to a formulation change and a win-win consumer test.• Idea generation as part of the innovation group which has led to several project proposals and patent applications e.g. WO2001083657, WO2001083667, WO2001083668.
