An old friend once told me I should specialize in one field. He almost lost his job years later when his specialty became obsolete. "A jack of all trades is a master of none," has become a bit of an insult to people who haven't gained expertise in a single skill. The entire quote is, "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one."I proudly served in the US Air Force working as a hands-on hardware and software technical professional, as well as performing management up to the level of a help desk superintendent. I've managed multi-million dollar projects, but I've discovered my specialty is the ability to analyze business processes and rapidly deliver complete solutions, typically resulting in unprecedented accuracy, time-, and cost-savings.I recently developed a Python script that automated a 40-day manual analysis process that now takes 5 minutes or less to complete. Another example was spending two hours one morning teaching myself Bash scripting and delivering a 1-file, less than 1MB, working proof of concept to replace an existing 1,000+ file 78MB network analysis tool.I have never claimed to be an expert in any one area, but my combined experience ranging from hands-on work to managing projects has benefited me greatly, and to a further extent, my clients.
