I led a group focused on delivering technology solutions to address market needs for improved enzymes used in Mdx (molecular diagnostics), NGS, molecular biology, bioprocessing, synthetic biology, gene editing and other applications. We used a variety of enzyme engineering and directed evolution techniques to provide industry-leading performance driven by customer need. Areas of focus included DNA and RNA polymerases, reverse transcriptases, DNA and RNA ligases, nucleases, CRISPR proteins and related enzymes and led to product launches in RT PCR, NGS library construction, cloning technologies, gene assembly, synthetic biology and other areas.

As the first employee of this startup, I was involved in every aspect of developing company infrastructure and systems. As Lucigen grew to a profitable, stable company, my focus turned towards leading new product development, particularly reagent enzymes for nucleic acid detection and analysis and biodetection and molecular diagnostics technologies. This resulted in the introduction of the first thermostable phage DNA polymerase, which, due to its distinct biochemistry, proved uniquely suitable for detecting viruses and other bacterial and fungal pathogens. This work was funded by over $6M dollars of SBIR grant funding that I raised as PI. My responsibility was to develop the technology and business surrounding these enzymes and applications including early stage research of molecular diagnostic tests for point of care detection of human and veterinary pathogens and design and development through product launch and post-launch support.

I developed new reagent enzymes for molecular biology research and diagnostics including enzymes and kits for protein purification, molecular biology and sample preparation. I assisted in promotion and customer care during and after product launch.

During my eight years at Promega I had several roles including manufacturing and quality testing restriction enzymes, enzyme discovery and development, technical writing and regulatory affairs. I successfully developed and launched several of the restriction enzymes, nucleases, DNA polymerases and other enzymes that are currently in the catalog. I was also responsible for developing and managing the safety program (chemical, biological, radiological, etc.) for the company as it grew.
