Rural Electric Cooperative serving 5000 sq miles into 10 counties in central Alabama. Primary counties are Autauga, Chilton, Coosa and Elmore. We are distributing electricity to nearly 43,000 active services, for 100,000 citizens. Power is purchased through PowerSouth Energy.

In late 2018, CAEC’s Board of Trustees approved a project to connect all substations and office through its own fiber network. They also approved adding the first phase of a plan to construct a fiber network for broadband to rural Alabamians within the cooperatives service territory, especially focused on those who are in need of this service. This included creating a subsidiary (Central Access, Inc), wholly owned by CAEC. The first phase involves construct of a 400-mile fiber optic ring and connect 24 electric substations and six offices as well as passing 9,000 CAEC services. The goal is to have 35% of the services pasted connect to the fiber network for broadband service, then expand the service from there.

Board MemberPowerSouth Energy Cooperative, headquartered in Andalusia, Ala., is a generation and transmission (G&T) electric cooperative that serves the wholesale power needs of 20 distribution members — 16 electric cooperatives and four municipal electric systems — in Alabama and northwest Florida.

Board member for the Electric Cooperative's state wide Association. The Alabama Rural Electric Association of Cooperatives (AREA) is a member-owned federation of 22 electric distribution cooperatives. AREA provides training, political & legislative support and other collaborative needs of its members. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is a member of AREA and serves as wholesale power supplier to nine member cooperatives located in the northern part of Alabama. PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, also a member of AREA, provides wholesale power to 12 member cooperatives in the central and southern sections of Alabama, as well as four electric cooperatives in panhandle of Florida. Southern Company also supplies wholesale power to two Alabama cooperatives.
