About Tom Weber
I am an openly gay man who has spent 33 years in the social services field, the majority of it in the LGBT community. I started as a volunteer working in HIV at Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) and went on to manage volunteers as a staff person, including supervising hundreds of volunteer Buddies who gave aid, comfort and concrete support to the sickest clients living with (and often dying from) AIDS, as well as the staff that managed them. I worked there for nearly 15 years, 1988-2003, during some of the worst years of the AIDS epidemic. I watched literally hundreds of clients, volunteers, colleagues and friends get sick and die. From there I went on to work in LGBT aging for 16 years at Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE). At that organization I did much cutting-edge hands-on work in the field of LGBT aging, all at the Director level, which included managing NORC and senior center programs, case management, intake, friendly visiting, caregiving, support groups and more. My staff and I launched an employment assistance program, a social adult day program, an HIV program, a veterans' program and an interdisciplinary health management program in conjunction with Columbia University, all for LGBT older adults. While at SAGE I also did much representation of the agency, actively participating in statewide coalitions. providing testimony to both state and city legislative bodies, and presenting both solo and with others at local and national conferences on LGBT aging, and many of its various intersections. I have experience working with both Development and Communications staff. I have planned and led many Gay Pride marching contingents and planned and facilitated many memorial services. Some of my strengths include supervising and leading staff and volunteer teams, program planning & implementation, and strategizing & collaborating with others. I am not afraid to get my hands dirty and I generally enjoy constituents. I accomplished these things without a college degree, having worked my way up through community-based services and hard work, not education. I used to have shame about that, but now I see I actually have much invaluable practical experience many others don't. Ultimately I did return to school and earned my Bachelor's in Community & Human Services, with other working professionals in the field. What I am looking for now is an opportunity to utilize my skills and experience in a new setting, in aging or even working with animals or some other new venue, for a program or cause I truly care about, as I have done in the past.
Listed skills include Program Management, Program Development, Nonprofits, Volunteer Management, and 2 others.

Associate Director Of The Community Guardian Program
I am the Associate Director of the Community Guardian Program at JASA (Jewish Agency Serving the Aged), with a staff of nearly fifty and serving about 700 clients. This program deals with individuals deemed by the courts to be incapacitated or unable to take care of themselves. This includes individuals with serious mental illness and substance abuse issues and housing issues/eviction cases, as well as the more traditional frail & elderly, and people with dementia and developmental disability and victims of elder abuse and exploitation. This program was deemed an essential worker program during the height of the pandemic and our case workers were required to go into the field while most case management programs went completely remote. I have been instrumental in providing an anchor to our staff on-site and holding our team together, while also collaborating with my social service, legal and financial colleagues to coordinate services for our clients during a very stressful time. This is a fast-paced program with enormous volume and never-ending detail. It is a huge challenge to stay on top of things.
Director Of Care Management - Director Of Constituent Services - Director Of Community Services
I worked at SAGE for 16 years. In these various roles, I oversaw a large range of both congregate and social service programs for lgbt older adults, as well as outreach and volunteers. This work included launching new programs - an innovative senior center, an employment assistance program and a social adult day program - as well as managing and expanding existing programs and services, including case management. care giver support, friendly visiting, and HIV programs. I presented extensively about LGBT older adults and the intersection of their various issues, and represented the agency in many public venues and networking groups. I continue to facilitate a discussion/support for LGBT older adults there as a consultant.
Director Of Buddy Program
I directed the staff and volunteers of the volunteer buddy program, which provided emotional and concrete support to individuals living with AIDS. This was a historically significant program for the agency and utilized literally hundreds of volunteers in a vast network of buddy teams. In this role, as well as providing support and supervision, I also performed client intake and crisis intervention and trained new volunteers, as well facilitating in-service trainings.
Volunteer Manager
I worked on-staff in the Volunteer Department as a volunteer coordinator, first supervising administrative volunteers and later on, training and placing client service volunteers, including buddies, group leaders, workshop leaders, and others.
