Systems Engineer And Ip Technologist
CurrentDevelopment of new broadcast technologies for BBC News, Sport, Arts and more. My role encompasses a wide range of technologies primarily focused on broadcast sim cards, news gathering vehicles, IP audio/video encoding and technical planning for unique events such as the 2019 General Election.Broadcast Sim Cards:I manage 300 sim cards deployed across a huge range of broadcast devices which are often deployed worldwide at short notice. In the past few years I have adopted emerging IoT technologies to materially reduce costs, decrease deployment complexity and increase global range of BBC devices. In 2017 I orchestrated practical field tests to evaluate the best solution available on the market, this work fed back and helped propel change across the wider BBC. Having found the correct suppliers I've worked to ensure their management tools and billing integrate smoothly with BBC systems.Newsgathering Vehicles:Last year I delivered 7 new broadcast vehicles for BBC News. This involved balancing and meeting a variety of stakeholder requirements and handing over responsibility for "24/7" business as usual operation. I continue to train new staff and provide 3rd line support for the audio, video, editing, IT and power systems inside the vehicles.IP Contribution Encoders: I provide development and 3rd line support for BBC Scotland Mobile Bonding Encoders (WMTs, LiveUs, Comrexes and more) used in day to day News and Sport coverage. I maintain a strong working relationship with industry partners and work to drive development and new functionality.Festivals, Elections and Outside BroadcastsI recently climbed Ben Nevis with a small news team to set up the first modern live TV broadcast from the peak. Our content was broadcast on BBC 1 and several BBC Radio stations. More regularly, It's Hay Festival and Edinburgh Festival and one off Arts programs such as Opera Live and Dance Passion.
