Bio of Tom WegenerTom Wegener has a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of California at San Diego (1987) and Jurist Doctorate from the University of San Diego (1990). He practiced Law in California for four years before leaving to pursue a life in the surf industry. Tom produced four surf movies, thirty six segments of his Waterman TV show, and started Wegener Surfboards. Tom came to the Sunshine Coast in 1998 touring the surf movie, Siestas & Olas, found paradise and never left. He started making surfboards in an old shed in Cooroy and soon was creating wood surfboards that were sold around the world. Tom created a green surfboard factory which was very different from the standard foam and fibreglass surfboard manufacturing. Tom was named Surfboard Shaper of the Year in 2009 for his work with the rebirth of ancient Hawaiian surfing and awarded the Sunshine Coast Smart Business Glossy Award in 2012 for his environmentally friendly surfboard factory.Tom noticed that surfboards are still made in small factories all around Australia and this industry has rebuffed threats from globalisation and inexpensive imports. What makes the surfboard industry so resilient? Tom embarked on a PhD thesis to answer this question in 2013 at the University of the Sunshine Coast and will be discussing his finding on July 15th at 6:00 pm at the SRC.
