In addition to the research role below, the position of DD (T&C) provides leadership regarding the Roslin Institute’s translation and commercialisation activities, and engagement with industry and international organisations.

A group leader in the Neurobiology division at the Roslin Institute I also joined the Euan MacDonald Centre for NMD research in 2012 and was appointed co-head of Translational Biomarker discovery for the Centre of Dementia Prevention in 2015. Appointed Academic Lead for the Roslin Institute's Proteomic and Metabolomic Facility in 2018.With more than 60 papers since graduating from Prof Ribchester’s laboratory in 2006, Tom’s research is focussed on identifying novel factors capable of regulating the stability of the nervous system in health and disease. This is primarily through a combination of anatomically dictated molecular analysis of differentially vulnerable neuronal populations across a diverse array of model systems. With expertise in experimental design and application of mass screening tools, our multi species comparative approaches have been published as recommended workflows for novel therapeutic target identification. Based at the Roslin Institute and situated on veterinary school campus we have the capability to move seamlessly between pathological assessment and molecular analysis of mammalian (including but not limited to murine, ovine, porcine & equine) neuronal systems through to in silico identification of potential regulatory cascades and lower order model based in vivo assessment of candidate ability to modulate neuronal morphology and/or stability. In a Career Track Fellowship at the Roslin Institute (University of Edinburgh) I currently head a small research group interested in elucidating the mechanisms underpinning neuronal vulnerability and identifying novel therapeutic targets. Our overarching aims include the development of candidates for the treatment of neurodegenerative conditions as well as the characterisation of peripherally accessible biomarkers for the tracking of disease progression and therapeutic efficacy.

Two consecutive post doctoral research positions (3 years junior, then 3 years senior) in the laboratory of Prof. Tom Gillingwater at the University of Edinburgh, Centre for Integrative Physiology and the Euan MacDonald Center for Motor Neurone Disease Research. This included a brief Visiting Researcher placement (Welcome Trust Funded) in the laboratory of Prof. Marc Freeman at UMASS in 2010.
